Posted By: Joann
The scarcity of responses to this thread is a good indication of the scarcity and niche nature of cards showing female players. Don't mind that a bit - I'll take the untraveled road!

The 1890 Young Ladies Baseball Club cabinet card is one of my absolute favorites. I can't imagine it ever leaving my collection. Someday when I have two seconds to think, I really want to try to research both images and find out what I can about women in baseball at that time. I'd pay through the teeth to get a vintage photo of the Vassar girls' team from about 25 years earlier.

(Note - not to scale. The top card - the 1890 cabinet - is actually bigger than the other photo. Oh, and another thing I noticed about the second photo. Two of the girls are obviously twins. I'm thinking that may help when I ever get around to trying to figure out who they are. Now I'm looking for a Bloomer Girls team that included a set of twins.)

J

Posted By: Joann
Dan,

@#$%@!!! No, I didn't see it. I've had a rough past few weeks - work travel, plus final exams for school, plus putting my dog down - so I have only been scanning ebay. My Watch List is down to something like 15 items, including the "Ended" list! I don't remember the last time it's been that low.

What category was it listed in? Maybe I can do a search and at least see the auction if the link is still live.

Joann

Posted By: Dan Bretta
I had it in my watch list, but I must have deleted it...I also tried to do a search for it and couldn't find it...I'll try to do another search and if I find it I'll post it here in this thread. I knew I should have emailed you when I saw it, but I figured you woulda' seen it.

Heh...I should have just used Google. Here it is, and apparently it ended in October so I must be losing my mind because I thought it ended only a couple of weeks ago.

http://tinyurl.com/y8d2ft

Posted By: Bob
Daniel- yes it did. In the early days of professional baseball an umpire did stand behind the pitcher to call balls and strikes.

And if you know, how far back do we go to find the change in umpire positioning? Hopefully the fielders and umpire also stood more than 5 yards from the swinging bat...

daniel

Posted By: Bob C
Met these ladies at The Pasadena Convention Center around 1994. They obviously were capitalizing on the Tom Hanks film released around then. At that time they were last living players from WWII era womens baseball league. Lovely ladies holding court, telling tales and genuinely having a good time! I did not know (then) they were already in the MLB HOF. I think I have an autographed ball somewhere as well. They were getting on in 1994 and as we approach 2007, I wonder if they are still with us. Hopefully so.

Posted By: joe brennan
As I've said here before I played minor league ball. Just to set up the next story. We were in a bar (imagine that) in Rochester in 1978 and met up with a women's professional fast pitch softball team. Well we not only were trying to meet them, but talking trash about their game compared to ours. Me,never the shy one and primed with a few soft drinks boasted how their pitcher wouldn't stand a chance with me at the plate. ( good contact hitter) Well, we agreed to meet later that week and I was going to show them how the real game was played. My buddies and a few of her gals met at a local kids diamond and I faced their pitcher with thoughts of jacking her out of this kids park. 240 ft fences. She paced off the mound and was warming up. Damn did she look awful close? Well I stepped in and had her throw a couple to get the timing. I was ready and the slaughter began. but not for long. After about 8 pitches and my buddies all rolling on the ground crying with laughter I slunk away from the plate wiffing on all 8 pitches. Not only did I not hit one, I don't think I got within 4 feet of any of them. She threw knuckles, drops, rises curves and heat all from what looked like 10 feet away. I never disrespected the ladies who play that game again. If you ever wondered why Ladies fast pitch Softball games are low scoring, now you know. I thought I'd spread a little Holiday humor for one of my more embarressing moments. Happy Holiday's all and a salute to all the ladies that played the game.

In Rememberance of James W. Brennan Sr. 1924-1982. Dad, thanks for everything you did for me.

Posted By: Joann
Just wanted to give one more bump to the best thread on the board. !!!! I thought in case anyone was busy getting ready for Xmas, I'd see if there were anymore posts. I've downloaded many of these images to a new file I'm creating of female players.

Really really nice cards and images so far.

JC, do you know an approximate date for your Star Bloomer card? It seems I remember reading that "Star Bloomer Girls" was a generic name for a variety of teams, but earlier than the Western Bloomers. I think that Maud Nelson played for a Star Bloomer team before starting the Western Bloomers League in 1911. Star Bloomer teams were maybe 1890's and into the very early 1900's. Does that sound right for your card?

Joann

Posted By: Jim Clarke
Hello Joann, I have it listed as 1890 on my website. Now with that being said, I have no clue what year it actually is. I picked it up long ago in an auction and my guess is the auction described it as 1890, so I used that date. I think it looks more like early 20th century. Sorry I can't help you date it.. I can send you a higher image scan of it, send me an e-mail on it, so you can see the faces better if you want? Hopefully you can identify one of them to help date it...

JC
