Posted By: Brian McQueen

Funny, but I always seem to get shutout in their auctions. Last night, there were a couple individual lots I was bidding on strongly, yet still unsuccessful in winning. They've certainly got some nice things available however. If the winner of the c46 lot would like to share some of those commons they won, I'd definately be interested in taking some of those off his/her hands and splitting the cost of the lot.

Thanks in advance,
Brian
redmaccie@hotmail.com

Posted By: David Seaborn
I was high on the large T and E card lot (#780) until 4:20 AM. Ugh! Thought I had that one when I was still high seven hours after initial bidding ended! Hope others fared better than I.

Posted By: barrysloate
David- I was going after #780 early on, but those cards seemed awfully rough. One note: lot #571 went for about 35K with the juice. I called them for some more detailed information and never heard back. Anybody know what was in it? It was so hard to bid realistically based on their sketchy description. Edited to correct price of lot #571.

Posted By: barrysloate
Sounds like it would have been better to get a good night's sleep and just set the alarm for 4:00 AM. I had no idea they went that late. I used to do that with Mastro- get up at 6:00, shower, make coffee, and then sit down to bid. Can't do that anymore.

Posted By: Jim Clarke
Yes I agree, the description could have been a lot better on lot 571. Why did it go so high??? A couple of bad lines in that desription as well "there is not much gradable material" and "One could go on for hours desribing this treasure trove of material in detail"... Well go on on desribe it then so people will bid it up to 50K.... Or break it up into a couple of lots to make it easier to desribe... I got outbid at 3:24Am on a Cobb postcard lot but managed to hang on to lot 783 to start off my Cuban collection.. Many HOFers in lot 784. Too bad it's missing the Cobb and jackson cards. It still would break up nicely for resale or really give you a heads start on completing the set...

JC

Posted By: barrysloate
JC- I agree. Don't they owe it to their consignor to describe the lot in as much detail as possible? Aren't we to assume that there were things in that lot that weren't even mentioned, therefore in a manner of speaking were given away for free?

Posted By: David Seaborn
Barry & JC,

I couldn't agree more. They have a nice reputation, a nice catalog, and some nice material, but the descriptions are really lacking. Just a few examples on lots I was look at; Lot 775 consisted of 22 card, 11 of them graded. The description only listed 9 graded cards and none of the raw ones. No idea on condition at all, or what the other two slabbed ones graded. Lot 780 took the cake though. I know it was a big lot and I know those can be cumbersome to describe, but I think they left money on the table by not mentioning condition on the tobacco cards. Heck, several times they didn't even say which HOFer variation it was. Sometimes under T206 it just said 'Cobb' or 'Chance' (often multiple times instead of simple noting the quantity in parentheses when they were obiously the same card). It just seems like taking a little more time would have made a big difference. Still, they had some great cards and I'll certainly continue to be active with them.

Posted By: Cat
I haven't read through the entie thread but yesterday I drove from Newport Beach, California to Beautiful Glide, Oregon. I get to my Mom's house at 12:40 (3:40 EST) and after some time I log onto Lelands and dang the auction is still open. Someone had outbid me on lot 780 (and lot 784 and I really wanted that one) so at 1:22 PST I put my bid in and was shocked to actually see that I was the high bidder and the lot is mine.

That stuff is very rough but so little of it is shown that I feel like it will be my own little christmas to see what I receive and the condition that it is in.

Posted By: Jim Clarke
Hello Cat,
Yes it is like Chrismas everytime the UPS, DHL, Fed-X, or Mailman drives up to the house. I hope that lot will make your Holiday.. And I'm not talking about Halloween

Posted By: Cat
JC:

You are right...it may be Christmas...or it may be Halloween Part VI. What is pictured is so rough that I don't think I could be to dissapointed.

BTW, was anyone else scared of lot 784 and some of those cards seeming short. I called, talked to Keith Vari, and he didn't believe that any were trimmed. In so many words he implied that they were low end enough that no one would have trimmed that grade of card. But I was still leary. The Ruth looked right but not the Thorpe and the Thorpe was a big reason for my interest. This was one auction where it would have been nice to see ALL the lots in person.

Posted By: leon
You weren't the only one that had their eye on the Thorpe. It looked short to me too and is the reason I didn't bid on the lot. It would have done much better in an SGC (especially) or PSA holder. I am a bit curious if it was just an oversight not to have 5k(or whatever card values) cards not in holders; being at least Ruth and Thorpe.
regards

Posted By: barrysloate
A lot of auction houses, myself included, will send raw cards out to be graded before the auction as a courtesy to consignors. Between the sketchy descriptions, typos, and all the raw cards, you don't get the feeling that Leland's really has their heart into vintage cards. They love memorabilia- Dodgers, Yankees, wire photos, rock and roll- and many other areas that they specialize in, but as I went through the vintage cards I just didn't feel that same enthusiasm.

Posted By: Dylan
I believe there is a chance the Ruth is an old reprint. i cant remember the website but a very knowledgeable collector on reprints had the same card graded by psa (a 1) and busted it out and explained that it was infact a reprint. All reprints have a vague printing line in the middle which the one auctioned in lelands does, and also the foot is cut off in the picture, which it shouldnt be. All reprints have the foot cut off. Anyone else familier with this website, or heard this explanation before?

Posted By: leon
It was Andy Baran, a friend and board member, that had the fake Ruth M101-4 graded in a PSA holder. It was a big board issue for a while, several years ago. Eventually I believe he was compensated somehow. I don't remember all of the specifics now....regards

Posted By: Andy Baran
I am the one who bought the PSA 1 Ruth that turned out to be a reprint. I bought it on ebay, and the seller immediately disappeared. It took alot of work to get in touch with the right people at PSA (they are all at GAI now), but they bought the card back from me at the full purchase price. I'm also the one who put together the Ruth Reprint page on Pete's website that is linked above.

The Ruth in the Lelands auction is low grade, but definitely authentic.

Posted By: T E
All for resale, all non-sports. Great batch of FDR photos for a steal of a price, about $650 with vig. (It is football season, I have to call it vig) At least I think it was a steal of a price, from my experience with FDR material, although whether I am the stealer or the stealee remains to be seen.

Auction ended at 5AM.

Posted By: Ryan Christoff
I won lots 789, 1015, 1016, 1027, 1028, 1628, and 1765.

I also made arrangements to get the 4 cards I needed out of lot 787 (Venezuelan) instead of winning it and having 94 dupes out of 98 cards.

There was great variety in this auction. I wish more auction houses offered a more eclectic selection of items.

-Ryan
