Posted By: Jay
JC--They are scarce but not rare. I have seen nice slabbed commons(almost everyone in the set) offered for $500-$600. I think the Sullivan in similar grade, however, is about $2500. In my opinion they are similar in scarcity to common Philadelphia K-Bats on the baseball side.

Posted By: warshawlaw
These are actual prices compiled over the last year. Nice examples in legit slabs would sell for several hundred dollars, at least, as you can see from the list below, and Sullivan is worth a heck of a lot more than $2,500 in decent shape. The stars in the set include several HOF boxers and famous boxers such as Jack Dempsey, Jake Kilrain, Billy Edwards, Paddy Ryan, George LaBlanche, Yankee Sullivan, etc.

Ashton p $329.95
Cardiff p $140.40
Chambers p (corner missing o/w ok) $224.50
Coburn p (major front damage) $34.00; f $190.49
Dempsey p $535.00
Flood SGC 30 $460.00
Greenfield p-f $106.49
McAuliffe p $787.00
McCoy g-vg $152.50
Pendergast vg $717.00
Sullivan (front) vg $4,494.00
Woodson g-vg $687.00
Lot (7) Flood PSA 4, Cleary SGC 50, Edwards SGC 20, Mace SGC 10, Chambers SGC 40, McCoy SGC 20, La Blanche SGC 30. $6,380.00

Full disclosure here: While I'd normally not provide pricing data publicly except with my book, I am showing actual prices realized rather than providing an estimate because I am bidding on various lots in a current auction of these cards and I do not want anyone to feel that I have been misstating the facts here to avoid competition in the auction.

Posted By: warshawlaw
The auctioneer shared the final price list with me (all prices include BP of 20%) The complete Sullivan sold for $3,480.00 (the one missing a chunk sold for $600). The 70 cards sold (by far the biggest group I've ever seen offered) brought in a total of $50,046.00, an average of $714.94 per card. The cards ranged from very poor (torn, missing pieces, stained, writing, etc.) to about vg, perhaps vg-ex on a foggy day. They did not constitute a complete set. Missing were #8 Mike Cleary, #15 Tug Wilson, #43 Jake Kilrain, #47 Sam Collyer, and #50 Tom Allen. Also missing was the error card #35 Joe Lannon. If anyone got some and has them slabbed, I'd be interested to see what they graded.

Posted By: Anonymous
I have recently started a website at www.boxingcarddigest.com and currently have almost all the 19th century boxing card sets pictured.

My aim is to display one card from every boxing card set ever released (or general card sets released that also depicted boxers).
