Posted By: fkw
Thats a bit high of a sale, but its one of the scarcest in the set, up there with the Walsh, Stahl, Graham, Duffy, Karger, etc. The book value is way off IMO.
For comparison.......The T206 Speaker books for $1K more that the E90-1 and is 20+ times more common.

Posted By: cmoking
Zardoz (the seller) is the man!
I wish I could collect the E90-1 set, such a beautiful and interesting set. But the relative large size of the set, the rarity of some of the cards, and the huge prices for many of the HOFers and some tough commons, finally got the best of me. I just couldn't afford to complete it if I wanted to afford other cards.

As for the Speaker, from the PSA pop reports, it looks like it is incredibly tough. only 1 graded PSA 5, with none higher. Only 5 in the PSA 3-4 range, and only 10 overall. Compare that to Ty Cobb where there are 73 in the PSA pop report.

I take my hat off to anyone who is tackling this set in PSA/SGC 3 or higher.

Posted By: Paul Moss
Thanks King!!

It was a pretty nice card and that's where the market is right now. This wasn't one of those wonderfully overpriced BINs that flood the bay everytime there's a cheap listing day sold to a newbie with a couple of dollars in his pocket, but to a sophisticated collector who knows the set very well. It started at .99 with no reserve like 99% of my stuff and I let the market dictate where they end up. I just wish I had a warehouse of E90-1's stashed away. Anyone catch what my Peaches Graham in a 2 went for? Even I was shocked.

Posted By: Peter Thomas
That is a very nice 3 much nicer than my 3 and nearly as nice as my SGC 50. If it were mine I would take a crack at a regrade. Price was astounding 6 times "book" on a VG card.

Posted By: Tony Andrea
Im actually the one who purchased the Psa-3 Speaker mentioned. It is as nice of a (3) as stated, but im not one to crack cards so it will stay as is. As far as the set value goes, im in agreement with King. The value of this set is sky rocketing and will consume you if attempting to complete in high grade. I personally think its one of the toughest "E" sets to complete now in mid grade and I dont think I stand alone with this thinking since the recent rising prices reflect that.
Im not sure if im going to finish it, but for now, im having a ball with it. Im about (50) cards into it now, with nothing below a (4) except for a three. Here's just a partial list of some of my favorites so far I have been able to acquire.

Psa-3 - H. Duffy, W. Keeler (red background portrait), T. Speaker.

Psa-4 - E. Plank, W. Keeler (throwing), A. Joss (throwing), F. Clarke (Pittsburgh), V. Willis, A. Bridwell, T. Cobb

Psa-5 - E. Collins, C. Bender

Sgc-50- C. Young (Boston), P. Graham, B. Bescher, B. Groom, H. Davis

Sgc-60- S. Crawford, G. Davis, T. Irwin

The Bescher, G. Davis, H. Davis, Willis, Groom, Bridwell, Irwin & both Keelers are tough ones also.

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Cmoking

I would accept your "tip of the hat" if I still had my E90-1 set. I sold it a few
years back for what at that time was a nice 5-digit figure. All 120 cards were
accurately graded Ex/Mt (15%), Ex (60%), and VgEx (25%). Cobb, Jackson,
Mitchell (Cinc), Speaker and Bill Sweeney were all Ex.

I wonder what it would bring nowadays in this E-card market ?

Speaking about Speaker....I sold an "undersized" raw one for $800, recently.

T-Rex TED

Posted By: Mark
I picked up a Clement in VG (Ungraded) for just $25 from Clean Sweep (Verkman) about two years ago - solely for the pitcure/stance. Only after the fact, did I realize it was a tough card - Clement hardly surfaces.

Speaking of tough E90-1's, I finally picked up an E90-1 Buster Brown,
also for the picture/stance which is horizontal and of a pticher swinging a bat oddly enough.

Mark

Posted By: cmoking
Hats off to Ted Z and TBob. I'm sure the prices were much cheaper in the past, but it doesn't mean it was any more difficult to track down the cards in the stone ages when ebay didn't exist! Congrats! I've always admired the old-time collectors that had a dedication to their hobby before email, internet, ebay, etc.

Posted By: Brett
I think the e90-1 set is one of the best caramel sets. They have a neat back to the cards. If it didn't have Joe Jackson in it, i'd probably go for the set. I don't feel like paying what, like $5000 or so for a beater ?

Posted By: Bob
I've often been asked why I spent money starting and trying to complete other sets when my E90-1 set was always one card (Joe J.) short. I guess I never got over the first time I was ever sniped on a card, an E90-1 Jackson several years ago. I thought I had it in the bag with a big cushion (this was before everybody was using snipe services) when I was crushed when a bid came in 5 seconds before the end and I lost it to a guy named Keith Olberman. Yup, that's him. It was a nice one vgish and I think I recall it went for around $1250. Have never been close again on any one I have bid on sice then. I guess I should have considered the 2 bullet hole Jackson card but at the time I thought a g/vg one would drop in my lap. Ine of my most bitter auction losses. (I still didn't know about snipe services until the Sunday afternoon Robert Utley sniped me on 9 of the nicest E98s you have ever seen. That was a killer. But I digress...)
The E90-1 is definitely an undervalued and underappreciated set...

Posted By: Richard Masson
E90-1 is very similar to T-206. Abundant enough to complete, but with some tough ones to pose a challenge. This set is the next logical step after finishing T-206, so I still believe they are undervalued.
