Posted By: Gilbert Maines
The problem with Long Island is that somebody put a major city between it and the rest of the country.

Last I remember, there are over a dozen lakes in MN with that name, so if you ask someone from MN if they live near Long Lake, chances are, they do

Jay

I love pinatas. You get to beat the crap of something and get rewarded with candy.

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
No Jay, NY is simpler. There are only three islands (recognized major islands, that is). Of course there is the one which we got for beads: Manhatten. And yes, the Long one. And the isle of Staten, the compliment to Queens; ie. Kings.

Edited to add:

All surrounding the epicenter, located in the fifth largest city in America: the Sloate House of Brooklyn.

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Barry, don't go expanding your reign.
You see: It is Gil who is the center of the Universe.
In the cosmos, You clearly deserve to be awarded NYC and more.

Edited to add:

Since I to am considerably technologically challenged here, Barry; let me add this experiment. I think that the formula for the smiley emotocon is as follows:
COLON, CLOSE PARENTHESIS
No space between them.
Lets try

Edited to add: WOW, it worked! Now we know. Try it!

Being bolstered by this success, please allow me the following range of emoticons:

Unhappy formula = COLON, OPEN PARENTHESIS
Joke formula = SEMICOLON, CLOSE PARENTHESIS

If this is correct - who knows others?

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Ok Barry, its colon, close parenthesis with no space between them -

Edited to add: I don't hit ENTER, or anything else. Just press "respond to this message".

It doesn't look like a smiley face on your screen, but when you press respond ... it converts it to one.

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
I believe Frank that the chronology will reveal that the Bronx and Queens are the bouroughs which were originally used as the dumps for garbage generated by Brooklynites and those from Manhattan.
As those swamp areas were filled, people began living there. Subsequently Nassau and Suffolk as well as Staten Island became the dump for New York. Now people are living there too.
However, where Long Island actually starts depends significantly on the age of the New Yorker you are speaking with. The newbie will cite the geographical/political demarcations, the old timer will think of where the garbage was dumped.

Posted By: Frank Evanov
Gil, if you have the time, check the history of Long Island a bit more carefully. I live in Nassau County. My town...Manhasset...was founded in 1680. Our town was one of several on Long Island which broke from the Tory Township of Hempstead in 1777 and supported the American Revolution. If not for Manhasset's sacrifices, you might be a subject of the Queen today.

BTW, what s**t hole do you live in? :

Frank

Not the fantasy which you find in history books."

Well you got one thing right, you should be sorry. If they have a library in that California swamp town of yours, check out the Onderdonks of Manhasset and the key role they played in the Revolution.

I guess we can all throw away our history books and ask the Crooked Mile lawyer about what happened in the past. I had heard you were an old dude, but I never realized you actually knew George Washington.

Frank

You know virtually nothing about me and your geographical reference is 3000 miles off.

I spent the first 26 years of my life as a resident of NYC So I am neither devoid of exposure to the history nor geography of your area.

Posted By: edacra
How does one get from one island to the longer island, I wonder. If only I had a car, or a proper understanding of how one rides the LIRR!

Archive
10-22-2006, 03:16 PM
Posted By: barrysloate
I can help you with that. The LIRR originates at Penn Station in Manhattan. There are several major roads going into LI, the most prominent the Grand Central and Long Island Expressway. But since I neither know where the show is or where you are coming from, these directions aren't accurate. But if you fill me in I might be able to help you.

Posted By: edacra
I was more joking then anything...I'm sure I could figure it out if I really applied myself. The LIRR has always been a bit mysterious to me though, and that's after 15 years in Manhattan. Thanks for the neighborly gesture offering help though. You must havea stockpile of karma points from all the selfless offers of help you bring to this forum. It's always impressive.

I think you should take your head out from your ass and leave.

Frank

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Gee Frank, if you do not realize that the original residents of Brooklyn and Manhattan disposed of their garbage in the surrounding swampland, then perhaps it is your knowledge of NYC history that is deficient. And as far as the Revolutionary War, I really have no idea why you brought it up.

Archive
10-23-2006, 01:01 AM
Posted By: Gilbert Maines
I probably would have bet against that because of the costs to transport waste that distance and the fact that Ca.has some of the stiffest environmental regs in the country.

But much of that is stupid because a large percentage of hazardous waste can be used as a fuel.
