Posted By: leon
I don't post too many of these, though I did post one a day or so ago, to give ample warning of the Headin' Home cards recently sold on ebay. If those cards have a dot pattern under magnification then they are not good. My guess, from seeing the larger scans, is that there was a dot pattern on them.

Some board members are new and I'm doing this for the sake of them mostly....though, I admit that after some of these threads I have learned something new too.

Here is a pretty good looking card. It has some telltale signs that aren't good....

1. The card stock is too "bright".
2. The wear "coloring" looks fake as cards don't normally age more (in color) on the outsides...
3. Card is being sold "as is"
4. All saies are final.
5. I have never seen a card who's condition looks like this be real.

These kind of sales can be good too, as I recently bought a Fro-Joy on ebay for about $26, and took the gamble. I got it and it's good. My guess is that the one in this auction won't have such a happy ending...again, could be wrong, but bid accordingly....

http://cgi.ebay.com/1928-1927-BABE-RUTH-60-HR-CANDY-BASEBALL-CARD-2-AUTHEN_W0QQitemZ150044322483QQihZ005QQcategoryZ317 19QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Posted By: steve f
Leon, I greatly appreciate these threads on counterfeits and now confident I can sniff 'em out far easier since learning tons from the pro's here. Keep them coming.

Paul, The genuine FJ's are b/w, not sepia nor multicolor, and severly likely to be counterfeits. For that reason, I believe they are the most undervalued Ruth's.

Although I rec'd them from the original owner and they were unquestionably authentic, SGC and PSA both returned them reporting they don't slab any Fro-Joys. After giving up and thanks to the guidance of a member here, BVG did slab 'em.
Posted By: Paul
Steve, I was the member who emailed you on Ebay & told you about BVG. I have I think 10 Fro Joy's slabbed by PSA, SGC, & BVG. I have three Ruth Portraits, one PSA & two BVG. The only portrait card that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling is the one slabbed by PSA. Not because its PSA graded, but because of that gut instinct that develops over time. I now believe there are some excellent Fro Joy reprints out there that look good under a microspope, that are photo engraved with the vintage looking ink & cardboard. I'm not 100% sure that someone did somehow duplicate the vintage printing, but I think that's why PSA, SGC, & GAI stopped grading them.

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
It appears that the seller may not realize that the card offered is not what he describes it to be.

He has 352 positive feedbacks (100%), but only 142 are from sales, of which none are identifiable as pre-war.

A knowledgable seller is a valued asset, while an inexperienced one is a hazard.
