Posted By: davidcycleback
I've never heard of a large vintage newspaper suppliment made out of cardboard. If the item is real, I would be surprised if it was distributed inside the newspaper as he describes ... His description is a bit mangled, as describes the item alternately as a premium and as a suppliment. It would have to be one or the other, not both, with a suppliment being distributed inside the newspaper. And nearly all to all large sized suppliments were on paper.

Posted By: Ben
Cool piece, but it's against forum rules to post links to your own ebay auctions on the main board. There's a place for that in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum.

(poster login: "wolterse", ebay seller's handle "wolterse00")

Posted By: davidcycleback
The auction description contains specific information about the issue (15 known, 1913, distributed inside newspaper). If I were a potential bidder, I would want to know source for the information. If this information came from a Mastro or Lew Lipset catalog, Standard Catalog or reputable web site, that would be a good source.

Posted By: leon
It's real from the looks of it. Would need to see it in person but I have one on my website and am positive it is real.....I do think they were a supplement. Not sure how they were distributed.....regards

Posted By: Dan Bretta
This IS listed in the Standard Catalog. It's a 1913 Philadelphia Evening Times Supplement. Another one sold on ebay last night that I had my eye on.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1913-Philadelphia-EveningNews-Cabinet-Card-Ed-Collins_W0QQitemZ290028223452QQihZ019QQcategoryZ21 3QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And they do appear to be on cardboard.

Posted By: leon
As it's an informative thread. The original poster either didn't know the rules or just broke them on purpose. This will be the freebie.....no mas...

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Josh, if you have the 2006 Standard Catalog it's on page 284.

I'm starting to have second thoughts now about not bidding on the Collins last night as many of the veterans here seemingly have never seen one of these.....I may never see that Collins again.

Posted By: Bryan Long
That it sucked that this was brought to everyones attention. I was watching this auction and considered the prixce to be pretty cheap at this point. I guess another auction spoiled I can almost bet that the auction will go beyond my little budget. I hate to be the board a##hole on this one, but shouldn't this thread have been delted and then allowed to go forward after the auction closed?

Oh well, maybe I'll still get lucky.

.

Posted By: leon
Almost every scenario has been played out on this board concerning the rules. There is no rule against outing a current auction. We have had threads about this before. It's not good etiquette and IS against the rules when it's your own auction. I let this one go as there was some good info in it. Unless you are the seller it's usually very "unwise" to out an ongoing auction.....regards

Posted By: Brian Weisner

Hi Bryan,
If it makes you feel better you weren't the only one watching the item. I would say half the board or more were watching and at least 3-4 Brian's or Bryan's alone.... Be well Brian

Posted By: Jeff Drum
These are real and featured mostly A's and Giants. I have several that I won in a Political Gallery auction in the mid-90's. If I recall they had 20-25 different ones at that time. I have never seen the Cobb before.

Posted By: Josh K.
Bryan - dont sweat it too much - there were a lot of people eyeing that auction. However, I agree that it was not appropriate for the seller to plug his own auction on the main board - this thread could have just as easily been placed in the B/S/T "on ebay" catagory or posted after the auction was completed.

Posted By: Bryan Long
That I should know better by now to assume that if something catches my eye on ebay then will catch almost everyone's eye on this board. I wish you guys would start collecting something else Comic Books, Coins, Stamps, anything - just give me a chance to pick this stuff up!

Sorry Leon, I didn't mean to try and play moderator. It just got under my skin since I was watching it pretty close.

Good luck all.

.

Posted By: Brian
Funny thing is that the seller made about $1000 on this item. He bought it recently from Hyee Auctions:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=86841&item=8831010685

Only difference between that auction and this one......everyone saw this thread in addition to the eBay listing? Hmmmmmm.

Posted By: Millerhouse
The appearance of the card on this board had nothing to do with the difference in price. I was the underbidder this time, sniping at the last minute, as is my habit. Unfortunately, the last time the card was sold, I missed the closing of the auction by mere minutes. Had I been successful then, it would never have reappeared. (And, if a second one had reappeared, it actually would have sold for less without my underbid.)

Dan

Anybody got a bum in this kind of condition?

Posted By: jeff drum
I finally located the auction catalog from which I purchased my PET Supplements. Slater's Americana in their Auction #5 (3/15/99) sold the following PET Supplements:
Cobb $373, Johnson $267, Mathewson $220, Plank $168, Marquard $91,
Collins $124, Bender $112, Baker $151, Myers $88, Tesreau $43,
McInnis $59, Doyle $48, Demaree $48, Burns $48, Barry $53

To this day these are the only ones that I have seen for sale before the Cobb showed up on ebay. And of course the Baker Leon has on his website.

Posted By: jeff drum
I stand corrected, I obviously missed that one. I didn't remember the auction I referenced having a Cobb as well but it did. These may be out there but I don't see them very often. Tough to survive in as good a shape as that Cobb looked like it was in.
