Posted By: dan mckee
I think there was a recent post about these but everyone please be careful. You can email me for a scan of a few of these. They are about 7 X 9 and have green print on them. These are very deceiving and have been recently printed and aged to look old. I wanted to send one to David Rudd to see but I am fighting to get my money back. I even wrote the seller ahead of time and they said they would give a return less shipping so I thought I was safe. Seller won't write me back and will not sign for the returned item that is sitting at their post office. I also need current links to the internet fraud site and the FBI internet fraud division. Thank you, Dan.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
A lot of this fake memorabilia seems to be coming from the southern states around Georgia, South Carolina, et cetera. Recently a bunch of "Fan for a Fan" started showing up on ebay along with some fake Stall and Dean Ty Cobb counter displays. I would also question the Coca Cola advertising pieces that started showing up around the same time.

Posted By: martindl

I was an underbidder on a Bresnahan Tuzedo about a month ago. The pieces are very good - I felt comfortable about bidding given the return policy - sounds like it was for nought. When I started seeing more Tuxedo's popping up the red flag went up.

Those 'Fan for a Fan" and Stall & Dean pieces are just plain bad, though the seller is putting them in off the wall places on Ebay and acting the rube which i'm sure will dupe some.

Posted By: T E
Fans in general are being knocked off with evil intent. I bought a nice looking fan at auction, nice looking until I owned it. It's an easy thing to repro. Christ, I hope we don't have to start authenticating fans!

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy
I saw one of these Bresnahan Tuxedo ads in an antique shop in New Bedford, MA about 2 years back, which I assumed was a reproduction. The dealer is based out of Buzzards Bay, MA and he does sell on ebay as well.

Has anyone ever seen an "original" of these ads or did someone just create the "non-period" ones?

Patrick

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
PATRICK Mc

Somewhere in my archives I have (what I think) is the original adv. of these Tuxedo
cards. I know of two unrelated collectors who have found these "cards" from upstate
New York areas. So, the source of these cards is up and down the East coast.
I saw them when I was up at Cooperstown this summer.

And, Martindl is correct....I looked at these cards with a magnifier and they look
quite real....and what they look like to me is that someone cut out the players from
the adv. and pasted them on thick cardboard and then pasted the backs on them.
And, who ever did this was very meticulous, as these cards are very consistent.

If I can find my copy of the adv. I will try to post a scan.

TED Z

Posted By: edacra
It could be helpfull for a lot of us if there was a running thread where people could post links to possibly dubious material they spot on Ebay. If there was some way to keep a running list of fakes and sellers to avoid, it would probably help do a lot of good for the hobby.

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
KEITH

The cards I saw up in Cooperstown, NY this summer all had Tuxedo adv. backs.

The most amazing aspect about these cards are their backs. Who ever produced
these cards very precisely pasted the Tuxedo adv. onto the cardboard. And, when
you compare these cards to each other, you cannot discern any difference.

T-Rex TED

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
I searched deep and found my adv.....here it is in two parts. I acquired this item
back in 1982 and it looks original; however, I am not sure. In any event, there has
been such wild speculation on this Forum regarding this "strange" set of 6 cards,
that I thought it would be nice to put a face on them.

The fronts of the 6 cards I have seen in upstate NY are exactly the pictures seen
here with the player's description below. The cards are approx. 3" x 1 1/2" and are
of thick cardboard. Also, there is a edge border around these pictures. And, these
cards normally have a Tuxedo adv. on their backs.

Dated July 5, 1913......
This adv. is a page from Collier's (The National Weekly); it's size is 10" x 14 3/4".
On the back of this page is an adv. for a WILLYS Utility Truck

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Hey DAN McKEE

From the scans of my Tuxedo adv. and my description here......can we conclude
that this page from Collier's is an original 93 year old piece ?

It certainly does not fit the repro's description you have noted.

As I see it....these 6 strange cards, that have been circulating around lately, have
been created from the pictures on this page.

T-Rex TED

Posted By: martindl

There are numerous versions of the ad with differing ball players.

The six repro cards I've seen are Mathewson, Cobb, Alexandar, Bresnahan, Jennings and Hoblizell - which match the player selection in this old Tuxedo ad

http://tinyurl.com/h5wlc
Posted By: dan mckee
That is exactly how they made them! And they look DAMN GOOD unfortunately. I won't state what gave it away for me but I needed a loop to detect it! Even the paper was fibered and old looking. VERY SCARY! A few came fro Marysville Ohio Tom and the others from Marshall, Michigan which is about 3 driving hours from Marysville. I have filed mail fraud, paypal complaint, and am following up with an FBI report. As someone stated above, too many of these fakes (not just Tuxedo ads) are coming out and are good! Another popular one is the 1938 Goudey advertisement! I had a slime shut down on ebay that was from Indiana that posted about a dozen of "too good to be true" items! ALL FAKE. Be careful guys and gals. Dan.
