Posted By: Martin Neal
Off topic I know, but what a game. Four consectutive home runs in the ninth to tie the score. Then a walkoff 2-run shot to win the game by one. All this done to take a half-game lead in the West. That was an exciting game no matter what era it was played in. Go Dodgers!

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
Leon, delete this thread... it's got nothing to do with vintage baseball cards...

Martin, thanks for the reminder about that nightmare I watched last night. Holy crap. When the guy hit the fourth homerun I thought they were replaying one of the other homeruns. I was stunned. I couldn't believe what I had just saw... 7 pitches, 4 homeruns... I just knew Nomar was going to slam that one for a 2 run shot in the bottom of the 10th...

Leon, now delete this thread... I don't want to be reminded of that nightmare again!

Edited to quietly add: Go Pudres... sheesh...

Posted By: Griffin's
That was one of the best regular season games I've ever seen. I got home in the 8th and watched the end, and Vin Scully's commentary made it even better.
Think this might add a bit of momentum to a streaky team.

Posted By: Rich Klein
Has anyone noticed that the Yankees magic number is 3 -- kudos to Joe Torre on what might be his best managing job in NY this year. No Sheffield. No Matsui, Pay-Rod playing like a dog; yet the Yankees easily won the division.

Now -- that is really good news for the hobby -- as anything that brings up the legends of Babe, Lou, Joe D., etc. bring back the love for the revered Hall of Famers. See, I can bring up vintage names too in a modern baseball post.

Oh did I mention how the Red Sux imploded this year.

Rich

Posted By: Bob
The feel good story of the summer and fall is not the Dodgers or Padres or Mets or Yanks or Bosox, it's the Twins. With all their injuries including the devestating loss of the best lefthander in the AL, Francisco Liriano, with a cheapskate owner in a small market town, they continue to play unbelievable baseball. Their 5 man rotation includes 3 rookies, Boof Bonser, Matt Garza and Scott Baker. They have no sluggers outside Jason Morneau. But as skipper Ozzie Guillen says, "They are little piranha, they bite and bite and bite at you and fight and fight and never stop."
Go Twins! America's REAL team...

Posted By: john/z28jd
I cant give the Yankmes any kudos, they have by far the highest payroll in baseball even with players out. Joe Torre really has a tough job of putting any all-star at every position in the lineup and if a guy gets hurt we increase our payroll from 200 to 220 mil. If they played right they should set records in wins, runs scored etc etc....no credit is deserved. When they can win with a payroll anywhere near the league they get credit but they cant these last 5 years and they just keep spending more.Other teams win the world series,Yankees buy it,big difference. The league needs a salary cap even if its at a joke level like 125 mil where only 3 or 4 teams can afford it.

Heres hoping for a first round sweep of the Yankmes and ill get drunk off the whine of their fans

Posted By: Lee Behrens
The only reason the White Sox made it last year was because the Twins had a down year when their defense sucked and they couldn't score runs. Now they have one of the best defenses again and have found ways to score with 4 guys that are slap hitters. Don't ask me how they are winning with that starting rotation but it sure is fun to watch and the White Sox have returned to there choking ways.

White Sox fans & bandwagon jumpers, you can turn out the lights because the parties over. Red Sox fans move on your sucks right now, but you have 125 mill to buy new players next year and the Twins and Oakland will continue to make the playoff with a $50-$60 million payroll.

Go Twins, no matter what they do it's been a great ride because they have no business being where they are at with there starting roatation and all there injuries.

Sure wish we could have been able to watch the game last night.

Lee
Posted By: Josh Adams
Actually bowling shoe guy, the main reason the sox won last year was stellar pitching. The Twins had a "down year?" Ok, but nobody was going to beat the Sox last year. Can't take that away from them, they were the best in baseball.

This year, well, it's a 180. geez it's frustrating. What makes it more annoying, is that the Twinkies have been on a tear.
Ah well, like I said, they will choke in the first round anyways.

Go Go White Sox
2005 World Series Champions!

Posted By: David B
Was driving home from dinner last night. Put the game on the radio. Dodgers have the bases loaded, nobody out. Force at home, one out. Inning ending double play. Switched to music. Got home. Put the game on the tube. Dodgers have second and third. Guy pops out to end the inning. Turned off the tube. Came back later. Eighth inning. Dodgers don't do dick. Padres beat the crap out of Saito and Broxton. Padres 9, Dodgers 5. Went to bed. I hope the Dodgers appreciate what I did for them. If I had kept watching, it would have been a whole different ball game.

Posted By: barrysloate
David- It's the old story: if someone would have told you ahead of time the Dodgers would hit four consecutive home runs, you wouldn't have gone to bed early. That's like going home from a game that's tied 1-1 in the 10th because it's kind of boring and you find out the next day the game went 25 innings. If you knew that, you probably would have stayed. Regardless of who you root for, that 9th inning is one for the ages.

Posted By: leon
The Chicken Soup Game. The city of Dallas is encased in ice, as players prepare for the game. Notre Dame QB Joe Montana recalled how the glazed metropolis appeared as he awoke that day. "It was beautiful -- beautiful if you were spending the day looking out a window."

Joe Montana helped Notre Dame rally from 22 points down in the fourth quarter to win the 1979 Cotton Bowl.
But Montana, despite suffering from the flu, could do nothing of the sort, and he boldly took the Irish to a 12-0 first-quarter lead. Houston uses its second-quarter wind advantage (in addition to the cold and ice, there is an 18-30 mph wind) to pile up 20 unanswered points. In the third quarter,

Houston adds another 14, as Montana stays in the locker room, struggling to stay warm. With the score 34-12, there seems no reason for him to go back outside. "We knew for a fact people were clicking off their TVs all over the country," Notre Dame center Dave Huffman recalled. "You could hear the ratings drop every time Houston went up another point."

But Montana did go back outside, and here the Montana legend began. Not much happens until Notre Dame's Steve Cichy grabs a Cougar punt blocked by Tom Belden and scampers 33 yards for a TD. Montana connects with Vagas Ferguson on a two-point conversion to bring the Irish within two TDs with 7:25 left. On their next possession, Notre Dame drives 61 yards with Montana running the last three into the end zone, then throws for another successful two-point conversion with 4:15 remaining. 34-28. There it remains, until the Irish get the ball for a final chance. With the clock reading :00, Montana connects with Kris Haines on an eight-yard TD pass, and walk-on kicker Joe Unis nails the PAT. Notre Dame 35, Houston 34.

We left the game with about 10 minutes to go..

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
What happened to them bums tonight? Down four runs and they couldn't up with back-to-back-to-back-to-back homeruns again? That's why the Dodgers stink - there's no consistency there! Ha!

But I tell you what, it was so nice to see "dem" bums not repeat that feat. I tell you what though, that was incredible to watch. I'll probably never see that again (hopefully).

Posted By: Bob
Don't count your chickens! The Twins can pitch Santana twice in a best of 5 series and that means only one more win from the rotation. Scott Baker is a Yankee killer so I like the Twins-Yanks matchup. Twins also have been clobbering the A's. The TV guys are dreading an A's-Twins and Padres-Phillies championship games matchup but it could happen!

Posted By: runscott
Leon, the coldest most miserable football game I ever attended, also involved Montana - it was the infamous 'snowball' game at Denver back in the '80s, where someone in the end zone threw a snowball and hit the ball as the SF kicker was about to kick. Wonderful!

...however, as a true fan (even of NFL if I'm at a game), I stayed, froze, watched the end...
