Posted By: PaulStratton
Does anyone have any info on this set? I can't find it in the SCD and I'm wondering what they look like. Is it a strip card set with a stamp on back? I'm assuming it's a multi-sport set since it contains Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen but I don't know if there are any baseball players. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks, Paul

Posted By: Kyle
Its a typo in the SMR... PSA hasn't even ever graded any before.

It should be 1928 Crecent Confectionary... and still no Jones have been graded.

-Kyle-

Posted By: PaulStratton
Thanks Kyle. I was a little skeptical because that would make it Jones' RC and I have never even seen one. Maybe FKW has some info on this set.

Posted By: Kyle
Jones' rookie is the 1926 Lambert, but I've also had a 1925-31 W590 Jones. I believe this to be his earliest issue, and quite scarce. I had two variations too, but sold both. One a PSA 5 sold for nearly $600, the other, PSA Auth sold for around $250.

Email me if you'd like pics.

Take care,
Kyle Bicking
Posted By: joe
Paul, I found in the 2005 SCD catalog. They have it dated 1924. Also, do a search on NET54 site for Crescent, there is a picture in 1 of the posts.

Joe

Ty Cobb, Spikes flying!

Posted By: paulstratton
Kyle-I have multiples of the Lambert and and a couple w590's but have never seen the Crescent. If it is 1924 then it would make it his rookie but I don't know if it exists yet.

Joe-I searched before I posted but found nothing but I searched again and found it. I guess maybe Brad(v117 collector) might be the person to ask since he has all of them it seems.

Can anyone else possibly confirm the Jones exists? Hope it's not too off topic(at least it's prewar).

Posted By: joe
Paul, the SCD set I noted is called Crescent Ice Cream Hanbury. I assume that is a different set? Am I right?. And you are right, Brad is the guy to contact.

Joe

Ty Cobb, Spikes flying!

I think you pointed out in the auction for your otehr Jones W590, that that card referred to him as professional golfer and was therefore arguably his rookie (my card being his "prookie").

Posted By: paulstratton
Mark...I think that is the set it came from and not the earlier sets. I noticed the number 92 on yours and the smr says Jones was #94. I was also assuming it was a multi-sport set so this fits. So it is definitely not his RC but still a card I haven't seen to date.

Posted By: Kyle
Hey Marcus,

Yep, you remember correctly. I believe that W590 card to be 1925ish, its a nice item. Hope you're enjoying it.

That Crescent picture is the same "design" that I've seen in my searches for the Crescent cards. I'm pretty positive that PSA's SMR is 100% wrong with listing the 1923 set, especially since its pretty random and they've never graded one before.

Paul - any of your W590s in nice shape? I could not locate one without the top border missing, which leads me to believe the border wouldn't exist due to the placement of the card above Jones on the sheet. I've got some images of sheets that have the cards pretty much on top of each other.

-Kyle-

Posted By: fkw
The 1928 Crescent Confectonery set is confusing because many think it is a candy issue when it is really a cigarette (tobacco) issue (UK?). They are rare, a lower grade Stribling card recently sold on eBay for $222.50

Posted By: paulstratton
I've looked through the Smedley/Berdock books and still can't find if one has been verified. I'm pretty certain it would be in there if it existed...

It has the look of a UK issue but Frank are you certain it is a tobacco issue? I guess I was assuming it was a candy issue because it says "confectionary" right on it.

Kyle...all of the 590's I have seen are cut like that including mine. I have never seen a full sheet or strip with Jones on it though. I think somone on here had a 10 card strip a little while back.
