1933 Goudey - printing of different series

I didn't want to continue this discussion in that thread as it is not germane to the E90-1 set and I think deserves a thread of its very own. <br /><br />Per Mike Murray's article in the August 2006 SMR, the 10 different series in the 1933 Goudey set were (he may have gotten his information elsewhere or from the uncut sheets themselves, I don't know his source)<br /><br />1: 1-5, 25-35 & 45-52<br />2: 6-24 & 36-40<br />3: 41-44, 58-67, 75-79 & 92-96<br />4: 100-105, 115-120 & 130-141<br />5: 53-57, 68-74 & 80-91<br />6: 143-165 (144 Babe Ruth printed twice)<br />7: 166-189<br />8: 190-213<br />9: 97-99, 128-129, 142 & 214-231<br />10: 107-114, 121-127 & 232-240<br /><br />#106 was not printed along with the rest of the 1933 Goudey set.<br /><br />From the sale of the 1933 Goudey Copyright cards and Registation cards with the U.S. Copyright office in <a href="http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/site/bidplace.aspx?itemid=3910" target="_blank">Lot 335 of the April, 2006 Robert Edwards auction <br /></a>, I think the information on the timing of the 1933 Goudey set is now known. Previous information may have been off by a month or so, nothing all that major, and I am nit-picking with dates. I interpretate it as meaning that is when the cards were printed and/or packaged and/or sent off to candy stores. If my interpretation of the phrase is incorrect, then my assumption of when these series were available would be incorrect as well.<br /><br />Disclosure:<br />I won that lot in the REA auction. I sold off some of the cards when I first received the lot to defer costs. I still retain the majority of the cards, but I have sold enough that the rest are no longer for sale. <br /><br /><br />

Although I don't know what SMR magazine is...<br /><br />I do recall articles in The Old Judge, Mr. Lipset's newsletter of about 15 years ago, and it had stuff about the printing of the cards, including the different layers of paper on the cards. I wonder if the stuff in the article to which you refer might have come from the articles in The Old Judge. My recollection is that there were a series of 3 articles.<br /><br />Frank.

Posted By: <b>bob donaldson</b><p>Wow, great post!<br /><br />I have two cards - #193 Lyn Larry and #205 Heinie Meine which are hand cut and have similar stamps on back. Both are dated Sep 20, 1933.<br /><br />The copyright registration cards are neat. Where it says "by Saul M. Arkin", is your interpretation that that is the artist who worked on the card? It would be interesting to get a list of all cards grouped by artists.<br /><br />thanks<br /><br />Bob

Posted By: <b>cmoking</b><p>Bob, there are two different type of cards. One is the Registration card which I showed scans of. The others are actualy Goudey cards that were sent to the Copyright Office. These Goudey cards were handcut and often look butchered. The stampings on the back have the date and the copyright id number. Also, there are often checkmarks done to make sure everything was correct (I'm not sure if it was Goudey or the Copyright Office that did the checkmarks)...and to top it off, many cards had paper clip indentations in them.<br /><br />Here is a front and back scan of two different Goudey cards sent to the Copyright Office. Note how butchered the card on the left looks. Two of every card was sent. Bob, do the markings on your 193 and 205 cards look similar on the back?<br /><br /><img src="http://www.network54.com/Realm/tmp/1152320091.JPG"> <img src="http://www.network54.com/Realm/tmp/1152320116.JPG"> <br /><br />Also, I believe the Authors on the Copyright card refer to the person(s) who wrote the back, not the artists. The 1934 Goudey cards had the same copyright cards, and in the REA auction, it is noted that the authors were not Lou Gehrig and Chuck Klein, even though the front of the card has "Lou Gehrig says..." and "Chuck Klein says...". <br /><br />Bob - the original owner of these cards searched for them since the early 1970s. I talked to him about it after the auction (thanks to Rob Lifson for putting me in touch with him). He mentioned how he would go to shows, card shops to search for these even though no one else understood them. He also mailed out hundreds of flyers to shop owners and dealers around the country with a copy of the back of one of these cards asking "do you have something like this". It was a lifelong pursuit for him. Apparently you were able to get two of the cards that he didn't find! When and where did you pick up your two cards?

Posted By: <b>bob donaldson</b><p>Yes, my two cards are hand cut and have the same stamps on back. #193 Lary is #128589 and Meine is #128587. I can't say for sure where I got them but my guess would be from a lot off of ebay between 1999-2000 when I was working on my lower grade Goudey set.
