Posted By: Paul
I'm not sure if any of you noticed that the HOF has released the preliminary list of nominees for election by the veterans committee in 2007. Here it is.

http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/news/2006/060403.htm

They had to dig pretty deep to come up with 200 players plus 60 executives / managers / umpires. John Hiller just can't be a Hall of Famer. But I think the biggest surprise on the list has to be George W. Bush. I absolutely don't want to start a political debate. This is about his baseball credentials, not his political credentials. He did sign Nolan Ryan to the Rangers, but other than that I think his most famous baseball accomplishment was trading Sammy Sosa.

Posted By: john/z28jd
No Bobby Mathews? Who made up this list! Poor Bobby shouldve stuck around for those 3 wins that didnt mean anything to him back then, besides a round number, and he wouldve been in the hall at least 35 years ago

Posted By: JudgeDred2
That was my first thought (regarding Mathews)... I guess Dave Orr was left off the list because he only had 8 years... now what about Lawerence J. Corcoran, the best 8 year pitcher out there... who the heck is that person that sponsors his page in the BaseballReference.com web site?

Cravath, Cy Williams, and Trosky.

Who would you vote for?

Joshua

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Elect Jim Kaat - I've been holding his rookie card for headin' on 50 years now, all in the hopes of some day getting twenty bucks for it, or so. Any longer and I will use it as a bulls eye. $20. just don't buy much nowadays. And I never liked those '60 rookies ... all in orange. McCovey was another, but he was better than Kaat. I remember his first game, what a start!

Posted By: Dan Bretta
I think Lefty O'Doul should be in...maybe not enough MLB time put in, but I think it's time for the HoF to recognize that the PCL at that time was nearly as good as the Majors and many players who could have played MLB played in the PCL because they were from the west coast and wanted to stay there.

Posted By: Bob
Deacon Phillippe, Ed Reulbach, Tony Oliva and Turkey Mike Donlin (who wasn't nominated). Hey how many guys do you know you have a regular issue card which states how many consecutive times they batted .300 on the front caption? T213-2. He was a brawler, a carouser, a ladies man, and a helluva player. He left baseball a few times for a career on the stage or otherwise he would have been a shoo-in. What a travesty like Marquard, Schalk and Tinker are in and Donlin is not.

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
If I could just get one guy in, it would be Ed Reulbach.

Jim Kaat would go in if I were allowed a second selection.

And Lefty O'Doul can go in third.

If I had more selections, I'd start "picking" guys to take out of the Hall. I'd need a couple of dozen votes for that. Kirby Puckett honored with Babe Ruth??? Gary Carter in there with Cy Young??? Insanity, or ignorance. Put those guys in the Hall of Popularity...

Mr. Reulbach should go in. Anyone who does not see that should read Bill James' section on Ed in the first version of the Historical Baseball Abstract, and then read his Politics of Glory which is about the Hall itself. Then read the 1915 (I think) Baseball Magazine article about Ed, and you'll understand how "managment" curtailed Ed's career as punishment. Then you'll undersand that Ed being out is inexcusable.

At least Ed is on that great long list. Hope those folks quit suffering from rectal craniums and vote Ed in.
