Posted By: scott brockelman
Wanted to bring this ebay auction to the boards attention for those that have never seen original W555's, they will always have either 1 or 2 factory round corners and a rough torn side. Almost all seen in slabs are cut to the white lines and receive high grades, when in reality they are trimmed cards.

I wonder when we shall see these cut down and graded?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-Original-1909-W555-Strip-Baseball-Cards-3_W0QQitemZ8823222033QQihZ005QQcategoryZ86841QQrdZ 1QQcmdZViewItem

Scott

I guess it's also posible that the whole set was on the candy box by looking at the the square lines. Too bad there isn't a complete box to look at. Thanks for post Scott, your right, we may not see an example like this again.

Posted By: scott brockelman
I believe these are the flaps of the box, and there were either 1 or 2 players per box, either 1 on each tab or just a single, but probably 1 on each flap as many early candy boxes had 2 per box

Scott

Posted By: Chris Mc
I would agree about there being only two to a box but the rounded corners on these cards are all different corners.Unless the person cutting them rounded them. Edited for spelling.

Posted By: Mike
About 12 or so years ago, when I was a type collector of sorts, I bought a 555 Steinfeldt from Fritsch. I think I paid like $10. It is probably the best 555 I have ever seen. Nice scorners. Well centered. No marks on it. Never attached to anyhting. (Glue). I have all cards slabbed, for protection. Oddly enough, of the hundreds of cards that I have slabbed, this is the only one that I have never done. Not sure why. I have always thought about, just never done it. I collect mostly Foxx related items. If this were given an honest grade, it would probably rate a 5. Now I think I will have it graded, just to find out once and for all. I cannot scan into the forum, so I cannot share it. Most likely operator error.

Posted By: scott brockelman
but if you trim them to the white lines they will all grade 84, just a matter of folks not knowing what the real thing looks like

scott
Posted By: Chris Mc
They would grade a 30 at best with that back damage.

Posted By: joe
Scott, maybe, but they would be downgraded because of the backs wouldn't they?. Unless you soak them.

Joe

Posted By: scott brockelman
I was speaking without the adhered paper which could be easily removed and would not affect the grade
