Posted By: James Gallo
Can anyone give me any more information about this set. I realize it is probably cheap because the players are generic, but I think they are great looks pieces and it will be my first set from the 1800s.

How were they issued? I assume they came out in this die-cut form and weren't punched out of something bigger?

Any info would be great.

James Gallo

Looking for 1915 Cracker Jacks and 1909-11 American Caramel E90-1.

The official name for these types of die cuts is 'scraps' and they can be of everything from angels to flowers to puppies. Below is a picture of three pieces still stuck together. They were sold to kids who would punch them out and put them in albums or whatever. Collecting scraps was a popular kid's pastime. If you look at late 1800s Victorian albums, you will see that kids collected trade cards, trading cards and scraps together ... I owned the below R & S Die Cuts and, while they are somewhat small and don't depict specifica players, they are quality items and worth collecting.

Would that be considered a defect and detract from the technical grade?

I can't image there are many still connected like that. Thanks for the great picture.

James Gallo

Looking for 1915 Cracker Jacks and 1909-11 American Caramel E90-1.

I would compare them to the Sports Illustrated for Kids Tiger Woods cards, which had perforated edges so they could be removed from the sheet of cards inserted into the magazine. The Tiger Woods card can receive a grade of Mint from all the major graders, and I beleive a single R & S can too.

That would only make sense as I'm sure they were sold (or given away) in that format.

I've also seen that they were meant to be adhered to cards as pictured below. They were from Consolidated Cigarettes........believe this sold in a Lew Lipset auction a while back.........

Cataloged in ACC as N352...........
