Posted By: anthony
Is it just me or are these cards "over-rated" and/or "over-priced".

SCD has some players listed pretty high but when found on ebay they are substancially lower. Even the common players are selling for just over $15 in some cases and the cards seem to be in good or better condition. Are they just not that popular?

any thoughts?
http://cgi.ebay.com/KNABE-1912-T207-RECRUIT-VINTAGE-BASEBALL-CARD-NR_W0QQitemZ8801506338QQcategoryZ86840QQssPageName ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Posted By: scott brockelman
the 2005 SCD checklist and pricing was mismatched and therefor incorrect, many of the commons were listed with prices for the scarce cards and vice versa. in general the set is seeing quite a bit of popularity and the scarce cards are quite sought after.

As an example a partial set of 181 in the REA auction brought 22k plus the juice, wasn't that long a full set was cheaper than that.

Scott

Posted By: Anonymous
This set is filled with rarities and tough cards (well beyond Lewis and Lowdermilk) and is a real challenge to complete. The last time a full set was offered at auction was at Sothebys about 2 years ago and the buyer did very well breaking it up. When tough ones show up on eBay, they are unbelievably competitive. The REA lot, while short of a full set, was mixed condition and did contain many of the tougher cards.

I have had a set for years, but it is lower grade. I decided to put together another set about three years ago, card by card, in mid grade and centering around a Nr Mt Cicotte I bought at the first National. I am still 20 cards short. Where are all these ugly, undesirable cards hiding?

And the Cicotte turned out to be trimmed...Had to buy another one.

Posted By: Bob
There are not only the usual suspects, like Lewis, Loudermilk, Ward Miller, and the rest but now you have to contend with the Red Cycle back buyers who pay increased amounts for these backs. Throw in HOFers like Speaker, Hooper, Johnson, etc. and there are still the scarce "commons" like George, Kling, Ellis et al. Truly a tough, tough set. I've put together 2 from scratch so I know.

Posted By: Glenn
Wallace Smith is listed in my SCD as $40 $70 $200. Are you looking at the 2005 catalog? If so, see comments a few posts up.

Posted By: Steve Dawson
Personally, I'm waiting until September (4 more months) for the 2007 Standard Catalog to come out. The 2006 catalog has a messed-up index, and since the new one will be out 4 months from now, the 2006 edition has too short a shelf life at this point. Let's just hope the 2007 edition doesn't follow in the footsteps of the 2005 and 2006 editions regarding the errors.

Steve
