1927 yorks & 1928 tharps, yuelings , harrintons ect

Posted By: <b>walter ruether</b><p>Ive noticed that the 1927 york caramels, The w502, The tharps ice cream, The yuelings sets & the Harringtons ice cream are all identical sets all from 1928 except the yorks, None of these cards haVE BLANK BACK, i RECENTLY SENT ONE TO BE GRADED WITH A BLANK BACK & IT WAS RETURNED a GRADE 7 AS A 1927 YORK, my QUESTION IS HOW DID THE GRADING COMPANY DETERMINE IS WAS A YORK, IF THERE WAS A BLANK BACK??

Posted By: <b>fkw</b><p>Since it doesnt have a "W" number, I think they did that because 1927 E210 York is the main set for that group of cards. Just like the 1916 M101-5/4 Sporting News is the main set for that group, and 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy and 1921 E121 American Caramel are the main sets for those 2 groups, etc. <br /><br /> I just picked up a blank back E135 and think if I sent it in it would came back as a E135 with a blank back.

Posted By: <b>Richard</b><p>Walter - that is what I am saying. You can identify the card as a york just by the quality of the image on the front of the card. The yuenglings, sweetman, etc. look different on the front. The picture quality is not the same. So your card was probably determined to be a york, but with a blank back.<br /><br />

Posted By: <b>Joann</b><p>OK, I'll follow up with a dumb question that I've been meaning to ask, and is within the spirit of the thread.<br /><br />I just got my first V100 Willard Chocolates card. Completely unlabeled anywhere except for the facsimile signature of the player's name on the front. I saw on someone's website some cards called - I think - Baseball Bats, or something like that (apologies for the haze - I go through so many clicks sometimes I forget where they led me).<br /><br />I was wondering on both, not so much how a grader might determine they were Willard's Chocolates, or Baseball Bats, or whatever, but how ANYONE had determined that. Is it verbal knowledge passed down? Did someone run across company records somewhere? Were there enough examples pasted in scrapbooks with handwritten labels that the hobby concluded or knew who made them?<br /><br />Any insights into how someone originally knew, found out, and identified completely blank cards with the designations they carry today?<br /><br />Thanks in advance for any insight.<br /><br />Joann

Posted By: <b>fkw</b><p>Hi Joann, to answer your question.<br /><br /> The Willards Chocolate cards name has most likely followed the set from the 1920's, from old school collectors who collected them as kids and remembered where the cards came from. It is also listed in the old American Card Catalog (ACC) as V100 Willard's Chocolate and much of the info in this book goes back to the late 1930's.<br /><br />The 1911 E-Unc. "Base-Ball Bats" cards are far far rarer. It is unlisted in the ACC. The set is named mainly because there have been uncut complete candy boxes found with the card on the back side (see photo in the 2006 SCD catalog). Same with the "Orange Border" (Geo. Davis Co.), and "J=K Candy" (J.Koenigsberg Co.). And maybe someday a candy box will surface with a few W555's on the side. many collectors are waiting to see where the W555's came from, its still a mystery.<br /><br /> A couple months ago I was emailed by a noncollector about an empty box of candy with a picture of Stahl on one side and the Pirates Team on the other. From experience I knew it was a complete box from the set called "Orange Border". I told them what they had, I made a good offer, and asked for a picture, but never heard back from this noncollector. The candy boxes are still out there waiting to be discovered.<br /><br />IMO Other cards that may end up being candy issues are W503, W574, W575-2, and a few others. Someone just needs to find a candy/gum package with one of the cards in it. May never happen, though.
