Posted By: BcDaniels
I was told you could mail away for these thus the famous players are far more available then the "in-action" generic player horizontal poses. Is this so? What might these generic posed T-3's be worth in VG/EX or EX? Thanks collectors~

Posted By: jay wolt
Actually the action shots are worth a premium over the standard commons. There's less horizontal cards in the set then the standard vertical ones.
And the 4 action shots are beautiful. Theres a couple other action shots that have players like Frank Chance & Chief Myers batting as well. I would say the 4 action shots probably sell for at least 25% over a standard vertical common player in a PSA-3...jay

Posted By: jay wolt
Also wanted to add, that all 100 baseball subjects & 26 boxers
could be ordered by the coupon holder, none of the subjects was
any easier to obtain, all were had the same way. Perhaps since
specific players were not listed on the checklist in the 4 action
shots, fewer chose them and they are in more demand today.
I have 2 in my set, and this is my favorite...jay

Posted By: Keith O'Leary

I agree with everything Jay said and he may have a more definative answer as hes a little more up to date with values than I am, but I think its safe to assume in excess of $750. Keith

Posted By: jay wolt
As Keith suggested, I do chart prices on T3's.
But stating a value of a specific card in a
graded holder is hard.
Here are some examples to prove that point,
all prices stated below are from eBay
auctions and all are for commons and all are
PSA-5 graded cards.
I'll list the ones that went for over $1000.

Harry Lord #2481.00
Rube Manning $1825.00
Tommy Leach $1701.99
Al Bridwell $1492.00
George Mullin $1430.00
Hans Lobert $1425.00
Bill Bergen $1403.00
Tom Downey $1125.99
Ira Thomas $1176.00
Peaches Graham $1115.00
Johnny Kling $1115.00
Ira Thomas $1009.99

Does it mean this is what they are worth? No!
Just what they went at that time as the aggressive collectors
fought it out.

Results will be entirely different if the same cards were eBay'd today.

Here is a great illustration, there are 2 PSA-6 George Gibson's graded.
Ironically both were eBay'd 6 days apart.
The first one ended Jan 16th and the big boys battled it out
and it went for $3049.00, the next one ended on Jan 22 and went
for $1795.00. Naturally, a big bidder was out of the picture since he
acquired his own a few days earlier.

This is the problem determing value on eBay, the top 2 bidders
dictate the price. On a Mantle card thats been offfered on eBay
a 100 times, you can determine a value, and be very accurate.
On a Peaches Graham that may have been offered twice, no one knows
what the 3rd time will bring.
I've picked up 6 PSA-5 commons at different times for under $500.
And will not participate in the high $ bidding.
The Tommy Leach above went for $1700+
My PSA-3 version looks awfully good and my cost, $187.!
...jay

Posted By: Frank Evanov
Jay, any idea who the players are on the "Safe at third" card?

Bobby Byrne was the Pirates third baseman in 1910 and 1911. Is it him?

Frank

Posted By: jay wolt
FRANK - I do believe you are correct.
I picked up the card art the Cleveland National
and when I registered it, I wrote this in the comment section.

Comments:
It appears the Pirate 3rd baseman is Bobby Byrne (1884-1964) their starter from 1910 to 1913. Played 11 season w/ the Cardinals, Pirates and Phillies and 1 game with the White Sox in 1917 and retired. His career batting average was .254. 1n 1910 he tied teammate Honus Wagner with the most hits in the National League, both had 178.

Posted By: warshawlaw
There is a marked disparity in availability between the more popular fighters in the set and the more obscure ones, which bears out the hypothesis that the "duds" simply weren't ordered by the public in as great numbers. That said, star power has a great effect on the cards. Johnson is easier to find than others in the set but is by far the most valuable boxer, with Jeffries, Langford, Jeannete and Attell also at premiums.

Posted By: Scott Gross
Conversely to Johnson (which you don't have to be liked to be popular), the biggest "dud" boxer is Johnny Marto, by far (followed maybe by Honey Mellody, but what a great name ). Accordingly, Marto is a tough one to find.

As far as Pirate 3rd baseman: How does Dots Miller fit (although a 1st/2nd baseman, check out the similar heavy upper lip):

Posted By: jay wolt
SCOTT - It couldn't have been Dots Miller.
"The Safe At Third" card was issued in the first series, so it was available for redemption starting on April 1st 1910. Miller played zero games at 3rd base for the Pirates from his first season 1909 to 1914. He played 9 games at 3rd base on 1915 and 1 game in 1916.
Problem w/ many of these cards of the day they are illustrations, some cartooinsh & generic some better, but they aren't photographs like the Fatima T222 so a 100% matchup is hard...jay

Posted By: John S
Could the "Safe at Third" third baseman be "Jap" Barbeau? I know that the Bucs traded him in 1909, but it definitely does not look like Byrne.
