Posted By: barrysloate
I think you are both way off. I just sold a PSA-4 Hal Chase on ebay for $618, and thought it should have done better. How can you value the Johnson the same as a Chase? I think a Johnson would sell for more than 2K, possibly quite a bit more.

Posted By: leon
I will buy all of the PSA 4 or SGC 50 T3 Johnson's w/ad back that anyone can find, at $1000 ea.....bring 'em all. My guess, and I could be a little high but not too much (in open auction), of saying add a "2" to the front of the quotes....maybe $2200-$2600....

Posted By: Keith O'Leary

Sal....I don't feel the Turkey Red backs are any rarer than the checklist back. Some collectors put a premium on them because of their visual appeal, some because someone once said they were rarer than the checklist back, some because they like advertising backs. I can't speak for them, but I can for me. I know when I'm buying a particular card, I don't consider the back when trying to determine value. As for the PSA 4 Johnson, maybe I was being a bit too sarcastic. I wouldn't be surprised at all if one was offered on ebay it bringing between $3000-4000.

Posted By: jay wolt
KEITH - I agree, I seldom add any $$$ to a T3 purchase if its an ad back. They are perceived rarer since they were issued with the high # series (#77 to 126) and not with the lower. But a high # card of say Eddie Collins or Walter Johnson isn't tougher then a checklist back.

And regarding some past eBay purchases of Walter Johnsons
A PSA-5 ended at $7457 on Jan 3 and a PSA-6 was bought via a Buy It Now for $8000 also on Jan 3. Both were ad backs. I'll check the pop report shortly, and theres probably more ad backs graded of Johnson then checklist backs...jay

Posted By: jay wolt
I just checked the Walter Johnson PSA graded pop report
and PSA has graded 10 cards, 8 are ad backs and 2 checklist backs.
Apparently the checklist back is rarer.
SGC doesn't grade this issue and GAI does not have a viewable pop report
to compare notes. But I wouldn't pay a premium for the ad back Johnsons...jay
