Posted By: Nate
Hello everyone. I have a nice collection of Tony Freitas cards, and have a question about all the cards that exist of him. He first broke into the PCL with Sacramento in about 1928. He was then bought by Connie Mack of the Phila. Athletics in 1932, until he was sold to Cincy where he played from 1934 to 1936. Freitas then went back home to the PCL, once again dawning the Solons uniform. He played there through the 1940's, and had many sucessful and prosperous seasons in Sacramento. He spent the last year of his career playing for the Stockton Ports in about 1951, or so. "Twenty-game Tony" has the distinction for having the most victories in the minor leagues by a lefthanded pitcher. He also single-handedly won Sacramento's only PCL championship by pitching both games of a double-header- he was my grandfather's idol while he was growing up.

I know that Freitas has at least 3 zeenut cards ('29-31), and I have all three of them. Are there anymore that I don't know about?

Sunbeam Bread made two cards of Freitas while playing for Sacramento in 1946 & 1947, both of which I have. Freitas had a Hage's Dairy card made between the years of '49-51 (which I DON'T have), and I think there's only one example of Freitas over the three year run. In addition, Freitas has a card in the rare Bowman PCL set (which I luckily have), and also an ultra-rare card from Knowles Service Station in Stockton from 1952 (Which I also have). Are there anymore PCL cards of Freitas out there that I don't know about, pre-war, or otherwise?

As far as his major league cards are concerned, I only know of the 1936 R314 "Wide Pen" that depicts him on the Reds. Does anyone know of any other cards of Tony Freitas from his major league years? Although he only played in the majors for a few years, I find it hard to believe that there's only one card of Freitas depicting him in a major league baseball uniform. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and take care.

Posted By: Nate
Hey there Blacksoxfan, I'm about to fly home to California for winter Break in a few days, so I'll definitley send you some scans of my freitas cards. As far as I know, the '29 is his rookie card, or "prookie"- depending on who you talk to. I have what I believe to be a 1931 zeenut Freitas, but I could very well be wrong- it's the same photo as the '30. Thanks for showing some interest!

-Nate
Posted By: Todd Schultz
also appears in the 1932 Zeenuts set. I only show the R314 set for big league sets, but I'll look again.

Posted By: brian p
Concerning his Zeenut cards, Tony is in the 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932 and the 1937/38 sets. His 1937/38 card is by far his most difficult to locate Zeenut card.

Brian

Posted By: Alan O'Connor
Hi Nate-
This is only the second time that I've logged into VBC forum (although I do look at it from time to time). Anyway, I just saw your post on Tony Freitas and I thought I'd share what info I have on him. I'm sure you've already got most of this info from others, but here goes: Zeenut-'29, '30, '31, '32 & '37; '36 R314; 1940 Hughes Frozen Confections; '46 & '47 Sunbeam; "47 Signal Oil; '49 Bowman; '50 Hage's; '52 Knowles; ('79 Diamond Greats). I only collect Sacramento baseball and Tony is one of my favorites!
Alan
