Posted By: Hal Lewis
OK, Peter, let me see if I can please everyone:

When an item comes up for auction (N167 Welch) that I express interest in... people say I am unwise for letting other people know that I want it because they will just run the bidding up on me.

Yet when I express "disinterest" in an item in order to keep the bidding down... people say I am unwise for "dissing" the card and then buying it later.

When I post scans in response to a thread, some people take umbrage to it and get angry.

If I start my own posts asking for someone's e-mail address, some people mock me and say I am showing off or kissing ass.

I am starting to see why many people just stay the hell away from this board.

Posted By: Peter_Spaeth
Are you saying Hal you have tried to manipulate the price of cards by expressing an opinion you don't genuinely hold? You, the "true collector" everyone loves and adores because for you it isn't about the money? I don't believe it.

They probably never try to manipulate prices or stay ahead of the competition.
Posted By: Peter_Spaeth
Total non sequitur Mr. Lewis and you surely know it, what on earth do my clients have to do with anything? Moreover, I have never claimed money was irrelevant -- YOU have on the other hand, just the other day you proclaimed that "we should never talk about money" or something like that. I was merely expressing GENUINE SURPRISE that you would admit to trying to manipulate auctions by expressing false opinions, because that seemed very inconsistent with the image you project.

Posted By: Hal Lewis
What on earth do my opinions have to do with anything?

They can't be right, they can't be wrong... they're just opinions.

Why should anyone care about them? Why should anyone bid or not bid because of them?

To this day, I will absolutely still maintain that the Toleteros Gibson is a "Tribute Card"... since it can't logically be considered anything else.

Doesn't mean it is worthless. Doesn't mean I don't want one. Just means that if it had been issued while he was STILL PLAYING, it would be much more valuable in my opinion.

Same goes for the Gibson postcard.

Not a "real" baseball card, but doesn't mean I don't want it.

Posted By: Peter_Spaeth
"Yet when I express "disinterest" in an item in order to keep the bidding down..."

Hal you are the one who suggested you did, not anyone else.

Anyhow, despite your ridiculous attack on my clients (or was it me) I wish you good luck if you bid on the newly-discovered Gibson.
Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Hal, I don't think Peter ever suggested you weren't about money -- after all, we all are to some extent (except Jay - but I think we need to fly in a team from Vienna to figure him out). I think all he was trying to say was that although we are all about money outside of this board, we should all at least try to be honest here, whether or not money is involved. There should be some sort of cone of integrity over this board because it centers on things close to our hearts (and I'm not talking about money). I know everyone doesn't play this way but I think, at least for me, I've given a lot of money up to various people here and elsewhere in the form of cards or deep discounts simply to allow people to enjoy what they otherwise could not afford. You know, pay it forward?
