(posted from 1919blacksox yahoo group)<br /><br />Max<br /><br /><a href="http://pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/sports/s_401024.html" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/sports/s_401024.html</a><br /><br />Two rare baseball volumes stolen<br />By United Press International<br /><br />Monday, December 5, 2005 <br /><br /><br />Two rare bound volumes of baseball newspapers, including one covering the "Black Sox" scandal, have been stolen from the University of Illinois library.<br /><br />The loss was discovered after the Chicago White Sox won the 2005 World Series, library officials say, when a spurt of interest in the team's history led researchers to the 1920-1921 volume of Collyer's Eye and Baseball World.<br /><br />Karen Schmidt, an associate librarian, said that Collyer's Eye was one of the first publications to cover the scandal when members of the White Sox threw the 1919 World Series. She said that Illinois has one of the most complete runs of the newspaper and one of the few that is publicly accessible.<br /><br />The 1924-1926 volume is also missing. The library believes that the theft took place in 2004 or early 2005.<br /><br />Both missing volumes have stamps identifying them as university property and Dewey decimal system numbers marked on the spines.<br /><br />
