We didn't have a major league team where I grew up, but we did have a Football team, so I spent all my hard earn allowance in the 60's on football packs. <br><br>A scared man can't gamble and a jealous man can't work.

Posted By: <b>ramram</b><p>The forum is considering anything prior to 1979 as vintage.<br /><br />As far as the begining of football...it would actually be pre-civil war. It started in the 1820's but didn't really make notice in the public until the 1850's/1860's. It started in the colleges back east. It was a hazing ritual known as "Bloody Monday" (on the first Monday of the school semester...guess Monday Night Football had some real roots) which pitted the sophmores against the freshmen. There was a ball involved which was kicked around but what actually followed was a big brawl. Everybody beat the crap out of each other. I actually have an 1861 letter describing this ritual. It pretty much evolved and stayed in the colleges until, I believe, around the turn of the century when there were some professional teams formed.<br /><br />Rob M.

I can name 1926 Shotwells, 1926 Spalding, 1933 Sport Kings, 1935 National Chicle (the biggest prewar fb issue), 1930s Diamond Matchbooks, early 1930s Dixie Lids and premiums, some uncataloged 1913 and 1920s cards, but I'm sure I'm missing several if not many issues.<br /><br />(Or perhaps this should be continued on the fb forum.)

It also covers vintage football history. No doubt all of those topics are acceptable for the Net54 football board ... For those interested in the subject, I recommend the magazine-- order at gridiorongreats.net. It's a quarterly, like Old Card Board, and is well run. They have articles from knowledgeable folk, I recall from Briant Wentz and the head of research for NFL Films.
