Posted By: Chris Mc
This really burns me! If the seller is willing to sell item before the auction is to end then they should sell in a fixed price format with a best offer option. I was an active bidder on the item and had my bid cancelled. It's almost as if you really want something you have to contact the seller and make an off ebay offer. Sorry just venting,
Chris
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8724706708</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8724706708</a>
Posted By: Texas Ted
I know what you mean. That kind of frosts my pumpkin also. When that happened to me once, I emailed the guy and told him that his decision probably cost him some money as I had a snipe set up for X dollars. I also let him know in that first email that I had placed him on my list of "SELLERS TO AVOID", so not only did his decision cost him in this instance, it could continue to cost him in the future. Turned out, he called me to apologize and I made some other deals with him off ebay, never listed, for some nice stuff later on.

My advice is to let these sellers know that what they did was crap, and that you intend to boycott them in the future. You never know what that conversation will spawn.

I have some auctions up now, and have had offers to end early, even by board members, but have politely told them I don't do that. What they are really doing is tempting you to cheat ebay of their fees by making a deal outside, as well as shutting everybody else out of the card. Just think, as a buyer, if you are getting stuff from somebody that has no qualms about cheating ebay, what makes you think they wouldn't cheat you also? You can only lose your integrity once. Guess I should put in my auction wording that I don't accept early offers so don't waste your time.

Texas Ted
Posted By: joe brennan
I also have some low grade T206's on E-bay right now, (shameless spam)and had a opening bid on all of them. I was e-mailed an offer on one of them that was much more than I expected it to sell for. But I declined because I feel that it would be unfair to the bidder that had already place a bid, even though it was only an opening bid of $.99. Integrity is the one thing that follows you forever.

A scared man can't gamble and a jealous man can't work.

Posted By: Lee Behrens
There is a response called error in listing if that is the case.

I personally feel it is wrong to stop an auction if there is already a bidder to sell to someone else. You just have to do what the first response said boycott.

Lee
Posted By: Texas Ted
I signed a contract with ebay to sell there that states that I have read the rules and will abide by them. One of the rules is that I will not end an auction to sell for a higher amount to avoid the fees. Apparently foxes like you don't consider your word to be anything but hot air, but to me my word is my bond.

Ebay provides the absolutely only venue of its kind for me to have a business to sell cards this cheaply. Sure I could have a website and somehow attract folks like magic, or open a big auction business and have instant attention or build a building, hire people, advertise and somehow have people flock to my little store. Sure. But at what cost. Ebay is an instant business that I can run simply, by myself, not only when but where I want to do it at a cost that is only dependent on the business I do. It behooves me to not only wish them success, but to eagerly follow their rules so they stay in business a long time.

One other thing. I do not blame a person who asks to end an auction early with trying. They can only ask, and I can say no. My issue is with the sellers that say yes.

Texas Ted
Posted By: Chris Mc
I don't fault the buyer in the case of ending a listing. The seller can end the listing if there is a good reason( Card misrepresented, damaged, stolen etc., but what frustrates me is this happens quite a bit on rare items. I collect a rare set and have seen cards disappear from ebay so many times that as it was pointed out to me in an e-mail(and thanks for the e-mails, they are appreciated), that I should contact the seller and express an interest so they feel obligated to go through with the auction. I like to think that it pays to be honest and play by the rules. There is real competition in the prewar card market and I have no desire for the shiny new stuff so I will just have to keep telling myself to play by the rules.
Best to all, Chris

Posted By: Brian H (misunderestimated)
My policy as a seller (who considers himself primarily a buyer) is that I generally won't sell some out from under someone if there is a bid in -- but when the Reserve has been met (if there is one) I have never sold anything... I guess there are exceptions that could arise but that seems like a solid rule

Posted By: Jim Clarke
I asked him why he ended it early and told him I had a high snipe bid in on it.. This was his reply.

"Hello, Not to worry, the card will probably be back on ebay soon. We decide to cancel the auction early because there are too many questions about the authenticity of the card. We are probably going to have it graded, then re-list it. Not sure yet...but we did not sell it to anyone yet. Keep checking for its return. -Dave."

You would think questions would be a good thing and to keep it live.. Re-listing it will probally not fetch as much as it would have.. He will now have a tainted auction in my eyes... JC
