Posted By: scott ingold
I picked up some unique stuff for me and am somewhat out of my element on a couple of items. Normally i would stick with what i no. But some of these items were just to neat.

Does anyone collect the 1935 wheaties ? I am just looking for some info on this Gehrig. Who grades these ? I already no that GAI won't.

Posted By: identify7
There is no grading company which has a clue on how to grade Wheaties cards. If they used a "pin the tail on the donkey" approach (proven to be better than the dart board) they would be closer than their experts.

I would grade that card a 1 on a technical scale, a wonderful on an eye appeal scale.

Posted By: identify7
Scott: the Wheaties ad has been cut off (grading companies almost always ignore this)and all dentils have also been cut off (grading companies often do not notice this).

It is a beautiful card. Like the w514, I do not think that we should try to assess the preferences of a kid more than a half century ago. All choices regarding what should be included and what should be cut off were made by the original eater of this crap. If he had to suffer through the soggy mess his mother put in front of him - he should be able to choose how to cut out his hero without our belated value system applied to his selections.

It was right for him, therefore it was a 10. The degree of preservation is fantastic. By all reasonable criteria it may still be a 10. But under the slab cops regime, it is a 1.

Posted By: joe
I don't think the 1935 series came with the Wheaties ad on the bottom. The 1936, 1937 have information about Wheaties on the bottom, not 1935. It's a great card.

Joe

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
There was advertising on the back of the box that said "wheaties" right below the card that was to be cut out. Many people also cut this out with the card, which is why you find some like that today. That advertizing however was not intended to be part of the card itself. Therefore this piece is not missing the "ad" at bottom.

BUT...this card is missing a small amount of the frame all the way around the card, so it will not measure correctly if a company ever decided to grade these cards.
-Rhett

Not same set but here is an example of the "ad" Gil was referring to...

Posted By: identify7
Joe: The ad is not part of the card, but it is there. The Wheaties ad below Gehrig's picture and frame is simply part of the box. It is clearly spatially associated with the card, but is it a part necessary to make the card complete?

Well, for the answer to this question I must defer to the Chief of the Slab Police. Please accept him as the ultimate authority. It frees you from having to think or make choices on your own; plus it provides an alternate authority figure who you can blame for everything in card collecting which you do not like.

He accepts this status, because you pay him handsomely for the reverence and abuse which you give to him.

Posted By: identify7
It is times like these that I wish I could scan or otherwise transmit information. Maybe someday I will become less lazy enuff to learn what to others are rudimentary skills.

Anyway, the ad is similar to what Rhett has shown, but even more associated with the ballplayer's picture, than his example.

For a reasonable presentation of this I can only offer Old Cardboard Wheaties Series 1, 1935.

Posted By: Brad Green

That Gehrig is very nice looking. It doesn't need to be graded. It looks good just the way it is. Besides, I can't say that I've ever seen any of the Wheaties panels graded.

I think the Wheaties panels are some of the more colorful items to collect. I have several of Lefty's displayed on my website below.

http://www.bandkgreen.net/lefty_grove/wheaties.htm

Posted By: Mike Campbell
I have a completely intact 35 Wheaties Box with Foxx on it. Found it about 12 years ago. Proudly perched in my display cabinet in my office. How many complete boxes are out there? I have often wondered how many survived. If anyone can help, please chime in. Thanks.
