View Full Version : Hurricane Relief - Card for Sale

Posted By: Josh K.
Leon - If you feel this is better suited for the b/s/t that is fine, but I hope you let this stay on the main board.

I had an idea that if board members offered a card for sale for other board members to purchase with the sales price earmarked to be donated to hurricane relief efforts we could probably raise a few bucks for a good cause and swap some cards.

With that in mind, I have an E93 Ames listed for $125 in the b/s/t thread. I am lowering the cost of the card to my purchase price $80 (incl. shipping). If the card sells, the money will be donated to the red cross hurricane relief efforts. I am happy to send the proceeds to one person to make a large donation on behalf of the board or to simply make my own individual contribution.

Anyone else game?

Posted By: Bill Kasel
I am sickened by what is happening in the MS/LA/AL area. I would imagine most of the people there have no idea just how bad they are going to have it for the next year at a minimum. While the rest of the country is filled in with all the disturbing, maddening details those without any access to electricity, information, resources are left to some how survive, many wont.

I would like to purchase the E93 from you Josh, and am putting up an E101 Davis (sliding) up for sale for the same purpose. I cant remember what I paid for it but it was somewhere around $65.00, so that is what I will ask for it now.

Please email me if you are interested.

While I realize many of you will donate through other means I find this a unique way to contribute.

Bill

Posted By: Josh K.
Thanks Bill. The Ames is yours.

I hope we can get some others involved - maybe we will be able to put together a sizable contribution. And you are right - it hopefully will be a nice way to contribute b/c you can contribute and still get a card for your efforts.

For anyone else reading, this idea does not require that you buy and sell a card - one or the other is fine - either way, a contribuition is being made to relief efforts.

Posted By: Josh K.
Finally,

I am happy to collect contributions if people feel comforatable with that. I would of course let the seller know when I received the money. I would also propose that checks just be made payable to the

American Red Cross

Please write "WRAL Hurricane Relief" in the memo line (WRAL is a local TV station in Raleigh).

You can mail the checks to me at the following address:

Josh Krasner
Maupin Taylor, P.A.
3200 Beechleaf Court
Suite 500
Raleigh, NC 27604

Posted By: Josh K.
Black Sox - Let me know what you can find out. Im happy to collect the checks all made out to the red cross and mail them. But if a paypal account would be easier, that would be fine as well. Basically, I want everyone to be comfortable with how any donations are handled. Any suggestions are welcome - we just need a way to ensure that any money gets where it is intended.

Posted By: T206Collector
This is sort of a reverse post, having missed out on the Lundgren, I only collect T206 cards. I do not really have any T206 cards to spare at the moment, but I would be interested in purchasing SGC graded T206 commons in SGC 40 or 50 condition at some agreed upon price (but not more than $250) with some or all of the funds going to the Red Cross, if there was some way that this could be worked out with a potential seller/donator.

Paul

edit: Have arranged the purchase of SGC graded T206 commons for $250, which will be donated to the Red Cross. Thanks!

Posted By: BlackSoxFan
UPDATE:
Okay guys here is the deal....

Our donation drive will run through the end of the month....i haven't decided yet if i'm going to just put stuff up as it comes in or if i'm going to do one big auction starting the first week of october....i'm leaning toward a combination of the two. But at the very least, iTailers will be donating 100% of the proceeds, that means everything .... to the American Red Cross for the specific purpose of assisting others in need. We will auction any and all sports memorabilia for this purpose, anything else you want to donate we will gladly take as well. I will be answering my phone and emails but i will return next wed. to Atlanta. I have alerted my employees and we will be donating 100% of our company efforts to this project. Once again, because Moderator dude is our address and info. You can visit our website (we've already gotten the main page changed) for more information. I'm not sure what i'll do with the ID's yet...i think i might leave it b/c of our feedback already being fairly high. That at this point is inconsequential. We have gotten the Am. Red Cross involved in this and have already contacted all the major authenticators (PSA, SGC, GAI, Tri-Star etc..etc.. to alert them to this). Please do not comment on the companies grading skills or anything of the sort right now. This has nothing to do with that. Lets see what we can do...i would love to raise over 10,000-20,000 but with some luck we can blow that out of the water! I will be in touch as always contact me as you'd like. I will add more than my pattee as soon as i get home and see what i have! Ripken rookie, Eckersly rookie, R Jackson second year, '54 Matthewson and Jackson,m some Clementes and Mays, and stuff like that. OH: the '90s card is the famous Bo Jackson with the football shoulder pads and a bat behind his head--dunno if he's wearing anything else. Do people pay for these things?

Posted By: Charlie O'Neal
Julie,

The Bo Jackson black/white is not worth much any more and they are hard to sell on ebay unless they are in lots. I remember when they first came out everyone had to have one and the price reflected that since they were going for about $15 a piece in the early 90's. Still a nice card though.

Ted, you have my permnission to send some on the the children, if you don't want to bother to get them graded, and don't thinkl they'd be worth the price of the auction--maybe make a pile of some of the lesser ones... Oh, the Jimmy Ryan won't grade--the bottom corners are clipped! Still should bring a few bills. Guy hit 310...photographer Stevens of Chicago...

Posted By: cmoking
I want to ask tax issue questions on how this works. Let's say I donate a card and it sells for $100 final price. Am I able to deduct any of that as charitable donations?

The reason I ask is so I can figure out exactly how much I am giving away. If I can't deduct it, it seems I (and the relief efforts like Red Cross) would be better off if I donated straight cash to them. So although I think this is a great thing, it wouldn't be worth it if it's not deductible (compared to giving cash).

Posted By: cmoking
Ted, you know I'd love to donate some cards - I've emailed you a potential list already. But I would like some clarification on how this all works first...I imagine others would too. Once you have the details hammered down, I think it will be much easier for others to donate as well.

1. Tax-deductibility - this means a letter from a charity like Red Cross or whomever you are working with. This letter is important for record keeping. All charities send out thank you letters with the amount donated, and I always keep my records. As I mentioned, if one can't get a letter, then it would be better off to donate cash to these charitable organizations. I don't know how well you have it worked out with Red Cross, but I think this is the key for you to get this off and running. I think you mentioned you'd have the details early next week - that would be great.

2. Where are these cards going to be auctioned off - on ebay? If so, I think that's good - what are the details of ebay's fees for charities? I think if you have it on ebay, with a bunch of different lots with similar titles, you'll get higher bids than the cards would normally go for - and that would be great. I know I'd be willing to bid more on cards I'm interested in. Heck, I'd even bid on the T206 Cobb Red Portfolio card if it was in an auction you ran!

I know all this takes alot of work on your part. And will take some time to get the details hammered down. So let us know when it is all set!
Posted By: BlackSoxFan
Hey -
Here are the details so far.... there is a lot more to come (you have to remember that this is labor day weekend and a lot of people just aren't around to finalize anything with yet)...but

1. As a donor, you will recieve a reciept/letter from us detailing the sale and the donation and it will include everything you need for tax deductions etc...

2. Any Sports Item we recieve (autographs, game equipment, cards, whatever) will be authenticated and auctioned off. We will hold individual lot auctions as items become available, if we recieve enough choice pieces (so far we have 3 goudey's that i would place in this category) we will run either 1 or 2 Multiple Lot Auctions, in the same style as Lelands/Mastro/Etc.... All lots will go on eBay. We are professional Auctioneers and will handle the organization of items, titling of items and research ourself. Of course if we have any questions we will certainly contact the owner of the goods and any experts about the item at hand.

As Josh Mentioned, SGC has already agreed to grade for free any cards that we intend to auction off...in order for this to happen though the cards will come from Josh or Myself so everything will need to be shipped to us. We have also contacted GAI, i spoke with hunter and he is very open and willing to help once we get him all the proper paper work (being done this weekend). Joe Orlando from PSA is out on vacation, but the people who i have spoken to at PSA have given us positive feedback. James Spence was very kind and generous and he is in the same boat as Hunter. Tri-Star is in the middle of the show, but will get back to me after the first of the week. Meanwhile we have also contacted the several professional sports teams, the Atlanta newspaper, and my person at CNN is going to present this to the sports department and we will see what happens. I spoke with the Red Cross and they are totally on board, we are going to speak with the head of the Atlanta chapter once i return to town and once they come up for air (hopefully thursday, but if not thursday, then friday). Ebay will reimburse us for much of the fees related to this, but at this time we are currently attempting to contact them regarding advertisement space and site wide announcements. It's a go without a doubt, but it is never to early to start giving! Our website frontpage already reflect this (www.itailers.com) however, at this time, myself and the other guys that work on our website are all talking on the phone and such to get all the information ready for online! Hope this clears up most of the questions you have King, you are always welcome to call me on the office line! Our ebay id is itailers (we only have three items closing this week b/c i'm out of town) and we are not yet sure if we will us this id or an alternative id (with a lower feedback score) to run the auctions on.

Ted

Regards,
Black Sox Fan

- - - - - - - - -

I'm Smart Enough To Know, There Are A Lot Of People Who Know More Than I Know

BlackSoxFan.com
email me

We have estimated the donations at this time to be upwards of $11,000 much of which is coming from this community! Most of the auction details will be finalized over the next few days and we expect to have finalized details comming in late thursday or first thing friday. Thanks again to all of you for your support and please spread the word.

Sincerely,
Bernard - iTailers Staff (via Ted's account)

Regards,
Black Sox Fan

- - - - - - - - -

I'm Smart Enough To Know, There Are A Lot Of People Who Know More Than I Know

BlackSoxFan.com
email me

Posted By: cmoking
Let us know when everything is confirmed, especially an agreement with a charitable entity, such as Red Cross. That is all I am waiting for before shipping stuff out. If I can't deduct the cards as a charitable gift, I would give the equivalent in cash to Red Cross instead. Ted has emailed me that this agreement will be done and donators will get a letter from Red Cross, but I want to be 100% sure. The fear is being left holding a letter from a non-charitable entity that would not hold up in an audit. I hope that makes sense.

They suggested that we try and have the national or local chapter of the ARC add us as an authorized seller so that we can avoid using their system and avoid their fees. either way iTailers will be out the posting and FV fees .. it's just a matter of figuring out what the ARC wants to do! Posted By: BlackSoxFan
LATEST UPDATE:
As of today, we have confirmed with both James Spence of SpenceLOA and our friends over at SGC that they will be happy to assist us with Grading free of charge. Please understand that iTailers will be the collection center prior to grading. If an item is trimmed or altered in anyway, SGC has agreed to grade the item authentic (provided of course the item is not a fake). James Spence will also do the same. All submissions have to come through iTailers so please do not send items to these companies directly. Mr. Golden is working with them directly to make sure that everything we send them is both inventoried and accounted for. We have instructed them to communicate as much as possible to avoid any possible confusion. The red cross has agreed to the established "relationship" and we have an agreement in place. Please understand that the people at the Red Cross who need to be involved in the finalization of all the details are aware of us. Please also understand that they are inundated with calls at this time (130,000 came in to the Atlanta center just today). Everything will come together in due time and everyone will be thanked, and taken care of as soon as possible. Thank you again for your assitance and we will speak with you soon.

Sincerely,
the iTailers Staff (via Mr. Golden's Account)

Regards,
Black Sox Fan

- - - - - - - - -

I'm Smart Enough To Know, There Are A Lot Of People Who Know More Than I Know

BlackSoxFan.com
email me

Posted By: Mark
CMoking asked: "I want to ask tax issue questions on how this works. Let's say I donate a card and it sells for $100 final price. Am I able to deduct any of that as charitable donations?"

If you donate the card, then your deduction is limited to the greater of (i) the card's value ($100 in your example) or (ii) what you can prove that you paid for the card. So if you paid $30 for the card (and can substantiate that amount), your deduction is $30. In the case of an appreciated card, you reach basically the same result as if you first sold the card and then donated the cash (in the above example, you get a $100 deduction but must also report $70 of gain).

Posted By: BlackSoxFan
Mark -
Astute point. However, with a little bit of luck we will be hired by the ARC to do the sales on their behalf. Even though they are going to hire us for free, it will make the full amount deductible..just give us some time and we'll do what we can. At the very least, we believe this will increase the value of the card, thus increasing the amount of the donation. Just remember, my company is going to be taking on all of the fees associated with listing and accepting funds .... something you will not take on! In other words it will be like a donation of the card to the ARC and thus you will get a full deduciton with no gain reported.

Regards,
Black Sox Fan

- - - - - - - - -

I'm Smart Enough To Know, There Are A Lot Of People Who Know More Than I Know

BlackSoxFan.com
email me

Too complicated.

I'm really excited about these auctions. I am hoping there will be a bunch of stuff that I am interested in...I would be more than happy to pay more for cards I want if I know the increased proceeds are going to ARC. I know there's no deduction from the buyer's side, but it would make me feel good.

I just put a pool cue on ebay with 100% going to the Red Cross, and "Katrina Relief" in the header - even advertised on a billiards forum. Zip, zilch, nada...but we'll see when the auction ends.

Good luck Ted!

I applaud missionfish/givingworks for their help but we are really hopping to get someone from eBay on the phone before we start this stuff in hopes of that. Posted By: BlackSoxFan
A few people have asked me about the start date and why things haven't gone up and why is it taking so long for the red cross to get the money.

These are all valuable points. I understand exactly where all of you are coming from so i want to address them each individually. As always, I'm not a mind reader, and i'm always available to chat and will always do my best to substantiate any question you may have. In the future, if anyone has a comment, please feel free to post or ask. On with the answer.

Right now we have probably recieved around 250-300 cards and items in total, most of which have come from people within this forum. Approximately 40 of them were already graded, the rest were raw. As we all know, like it or not, graded cards sell better. This is in part due to the fact that people know they are unaltered (yes i know what many of you are thinking). In an auction environment, if any person sells an item and the buyer feels the item is not as described ... the customer might want to get a refund and such. Even if you as an individual are selling the item, if you sell a raw card for charity and then donate the money as soon as you receive it... what do you do when the customer picks up the phone a week later and complains? Do you take the item back.... then you have not only left yourself in a difficult position but also could be accused of fraud.
Additionally, I know a good bit about cards, but i'm not an authenticator...i cannot garuntee all of the cards i have gotten in b/c they just fall out of my wheel house. As such, we are fortunate to have a company like SGC stepping up and helping us out here. This will insure the safety of the transaction, increase the sale price. This will allow us to make all sales final.
I don't have an exact count right now b/c we have not had an opprotunity to enter each card into a database. We have all the lists and such. Thanks to a fellow board member (whose name i will use if he allows), we just received a database designed for tracking the status of all the cards and donations and such.
Okay so now you ask... well if 200 to 300 cards are at the graders, why are we not moving forward with the sale of the other items? Well for a coule of reasons. First, many of the donations include cards from the same set .... some of them are raw and some are holdered. As such, we think it would generate the most money if we wait until we have all of those available at one time. Additonally, some people have donated cards from the same set. We have to keep these seperate. For example, if two people each donated half of the T206 set...we couldn't offer it as one lot b/c then we would have no way of truly saying which cards (and thus which donation) generated which portion of the sale price.
Also, at this time, I am currently trying to work with the National Chapter of the red cross to arrange for us to be able to legally avoid using MissionFish. This is ebay's charitable wing that assits people in donating to charity. We have spoken on the phone with people at MissionFish (aka...giving works) and they have advised us in this manner as well. If we were to go through giving works.... $3.00 from EVERY auction lot would be lost. That three dollars would go to MF. They are also an non-profit but they still take money to cover their own costs. Also, the money we donate to them would go into an Escrow account for several weeks. I can explain why if anyone would like to know, but for now let's just leave it at that. So, although there seems to be a big delay in the start of this all, i can promise you that we are all working full time on this. The national chapter of the ARC is still recieving over 200,000 phone calls a day! The people there are working very hard, and their time is valuable. We have to work with them to make this happen and not the other way around.
Also, one of the concerns is that while there is a tremendous amount of support for this cause, it is going to be a very long process for New Orleans to get back up to speed. As such, what happens in 3 months when the donations have slowed, if not stopped! I also hope that with the efforts of SGC and all those involved, people will pay a little more for these cards b/c they know what is happening with the money. Maybe that's idealistic, but that's what i hope.
Lastly i think that people here might say, well if i had known all of this i would have just donated money or you'd still rather. Or better, "I would have just sold the card here on the board like i originally wanted to and the ARC would already have their money" If that is something that you feel strongly about, i am happy to return the cards to you. However, if they have already been sent into SGC, you will have to pay for the grading. I hope that people on eBay having access to these cards will mean that the cards will sell for more than what poeple where asking on here.
I can assure you that you will all have proper documentation and reciepts for tax purposes in time for tax season. In the meantime, i hope this answers a lot of the questions out there. I also hope that people understand, i do not feel that if you havce not submitted to our auction that something is not right. Please understand, giving is what is important here..not how or what you give.
I also urge any of you to call me day or night if you have any questions at alL! Don't wait for them to be answered and don't assume that i know your concerns unless you bring them to me. I will be working on this tomorrow until i leave town for the night. I have a personal matter to attend to. Some of you know what this is and i promise i would not be leaving this matter if it were not for good reason. I will be back on tuesday late morning to continue. In the meantime, i'm busy scanning all of the items we still ahve and preparing them for auction. Aks and i will answer. Call me any time you want. I'm up almost all the time except 4am-7:30am (or 8am sometimes) EST.

Thanks for your time.

Ted

Regards,
Black Sox Fan

- - - - - - - - -

I'm Smart Enough To Know, There Are A Lot Of People Who Know More Than I Know

BlackSoxFan.com
email me
