Posted By: Texas Ted
While sitting at the ballpark last night with a couple of other board members, we were wondering how many board members were still attending major or minor league baseball games. While we all have one foot in history with our love of old cardboard, do you still like baseball as it is today? When is the last time you went to see a major or minor league game?

By the way, the Rangers beat the White Sox last night under a threatening sky and in an unusally cool 91 degree evening. While neither of the teams are my personal favorites, baseball is baseball and what with the companions, hot dogs, peanuts and beer, it was a great way to spend an evening.

Texas Ted
Posted By: Frank Wakefield
I have not been to a game this year, yet. A hospital visit negated a planned trip... I do hope to see a game in St. Louis in 2 weeks, and a game in Cincy in 3 weeks.

A few years ago, about 2001, when Alex Rodriguez signed that huge contract with Texas, a wise collecting friend of mine opined one day that "we" were not baseball fans. I was dumbstruck. We had been to major and minor league games together, we knew who Harry Wright was, we both had Jefferson Burdick's American Card Catalog, we knew it didn't matter which way you faced as you turned when you ran past first, it was whether you were attempting to advance... I asked him what he meant. He said that when a shortstop is paid over 25 million dollars to play 162 games, how could we be a fan of that? He said we were fans of 19th and 20th century baseball, not the 21st century game. He was right. If Texas averaged 40,000 a game for 81 home games, that would be 3.2 million, so I figured over $8 a ticket would cover A-Rod's salary. I'm not against him for getting it, good for him. Baseball is NUTZ! Read Williams' book "Card Sharks" to learn how buyers of modern cards helped fund the last players' strike... So I go see a few games each year, but not like the old days.

I bought a card on eBay about a year ago, a Remar Bread PCL card. With the email about where to send the $4 was this...

"I like to sit outside, drink beer, and hollar at people.
If I do that at home I get arrested and go to jail.
So I go to baseball games and fit right in."

He is oh so right, where else can you sit outside, hollar at one side, both, or even include the men in blue? And if you're sly you can sit on the isle, in one of those seats where the beer comes to you.

So I'm a fanatic of 19th and 20th century baseball, and I have some interest and derive some enjoyment from the modern game (echoes of Henry Chadwick?).

I've seen some great games at Yankee stadium but like Shea better. Baseball will always be a part of summer for me and while I watch a lot of out of market games ,care of the dish, I still like going to the park. GO GO Sox! (White of course)

Of course, the game is on the tube every night.

Agree on the high prices, but these aren't so much a problem with the franchise, more of the secondary market (at least here in Boston). Then again, these baseball cards are pretty expensive too. There's no such thing as a boycot in Boston. You will never see an empty seat here, but Boston is nuts about sports anyways, and well it should be.

Cheers!

Greg

Posted By: Michael Peich
But, I'm a Phillies fan, and my tolerance level is constantly challenged. As a season ticket holder I've seen a lot of uninspired, shoddy baseball over the past few decades. There have been the occasional unexplained blips on the screeen (1980 and 1993), but I still enjoy the game. In fact, during those pfrequent moments of Phillies phlopping around the pfield in un-pfocussed pfutility, I find myself going back in time and wondering how the Big Del (Ed Delahanty) or other historical players would have played as members of these contemporary teams. It's part of the joy of a game based on comparable stats (well, comparable most of the time).
Every December, when the mail brings my annual invoice, I ask myself (with my wife whispering the same question in my ear), Why do I spend money on tickets to support this organization? I could buy more little pieces of printed cardboard (whispering from wife intensifies at this point). It's hopeless, though, because I love the game. After all, I grew up a Cubs fan, so I understand pfutility in a pfirst-hand sort of way.
Cheers, Mike

Posted By: leon
As one of Texas Ted's compadre's last night I can heartily say I completely agree with Frank W. on this matter. I played ball as a kid growing up, opened packs in the early '70's, and got turned off by the strike. For the rest of my thoughts just read Frank's thoughts. A synopsis of my own thought though, is that major leaguer's are overpaid, spoiled, steroid taking babies (maybe not as many steroids as of now). With that being said I thoroughly enjoy the Frisco Roughriders games (Texas AA). You drive up to the ballpark, park for free, walk across the street (less than a block), get into the game with your $10 ticket (every seat is good), eat your $2.50 hot dog (not $4.25 like the Ballpark in Arlington), and sit down and watch guys playing 85% as good as the major leaguers and everyone enjoys it. BTW, I do want to thank Ted for the free ticket and Rich for paying for the parking....all I had to do was drive...Don't get me wrong I still like watching almost any baseball but supporting the major leagues is not on my agenda.......regards

Have only been to 4 games
since.....Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards, Philly Vet, and the
new Philly ballpark.

However, have attended many Minor Lge games....Reading, PA:
Trenton, NJ; Somerville, NJ; Cooperstown, NY; etc, etc.

I must add, while visiting friends in Ft Lauderdale this spring
did get to see Orioles, Cardinals, Mets, Bucs, and Yankees.
This was the most Major League BB I've seen since I was a kid.
And, in much better settings than in their respective ballparks.

Posted By: Tom Boblitt
my landlord for my business has season tickets to the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati AAA club). GREAT stadium and great atmosphere. I can pretty much get seats when I want them. I've been a couple times this year. Get to see rehabbing Austin Kearns and some of the other guys. Adam Dunn was through here in 2002. Right up the road (90 miles) from Cincinnati. Fond memories of going to games with my mom and dad when I was a kid. We'd stay a couple nights and hit 2-3 games in a series. Went to Shea and Yankee stadium for the first time last year. Still haven't been to the new stadium in Cinci....time just doesn't seem to be in my favor for catching a lot of games.

*** SHAMELESS PLUG BELOW ***
I do, however, have season tickets to my Louisville Cardinals football and basketball. Great time to be a Cardinal fan......#12 in preseason football (get ready for USC-Louisville Rose Bowl game) and will probably be #6-#7 in basketball preseason after going to final 4 last year......

Posted By: john/z28jd
Ive gone to see the Pirates play in Philly and at Yankee Stadium. The difference between the 2 parks are night and day.Philly was clean, safe, people werent idiots or annoying, prices werent real bad and i actually had a good time.Yankee stadium was the exact opposite in all cases.I would never go there again but would attend at any other stadium because i love baseball

I would just saying last night that the only thing i hate about baseball now is the Yankees way of thinking and their fans(not all of them but most). I cant imagine rooting for a team with a payroll in a different stratosphere as anyone else that makes all their money off overcharging the fans. The prices are ridiculous at the stadium yet they sell out everyday and then go and waste the fans hard earned money. Why couldnt they have normal prices, actually have a gm that does something besides sign every available player, and a payroll near any other team? Thats not a dedicated owner like they say,hes still making 50 million a year easily off the team, thats mistreatment of their fans.

Their announcers said last night that Yankees need to win vs teams like Blue Jays,Mariners,Devil Rays and Royals because they are just better than those teams.Really, are you guys sure about that? Could it be because if you take those 4 teams combined their payroll is less than the Yankees by over 15 million this year! Wow real impressive stuff

If the Yankees buy the world series this year(you cant call it winning when you outspend the closest team by 90 million) it will be one of the worst things for baseball. They need to miss the playoffs and sit back and think about their spending and stop raising prices every single year whether they win or not.

As far as every other aspect of current baseball i love it.I have xmradio and have easily listened to parts or all of over 300 games.I have the MLB extra inning package on cable and ive watched parts of at least another 700 games.Im going to 2 more games this year, the end of september Mets vs Washington in rfk on a saturday night, then the following sunday day we are going to Baltimore for the Orioles/Red Sox game.Ive never been to 2 different stadiums within a short time span let alone only 18 hours between starts of games

When to a Red Sox game at Fenway while in town to attend MIT reunion. On way to hotel on T bought an extra ticket for $20 from a guy who was on his way to the day game. Checked into Hotel, my wife Linda when shopping and I walked to game probably abouy 500 games there over the past years, but not more than 1 or 2 a year since I moved to Florida 25 years ago. Great seats behind 3rd big popie walk-off hr to win. Live near (20 miles) Marlins, have not been to a game in 10 years horrible park.

Posted By: Jim Novotny
I go as often as I can with my family. In particular, I love to watch my 9 year old son's reaction to the game. His enthusiasm in the sport is what got me back into collecting cards and in turn led me to collecting vintage cards. Watching a game through his eyes is refreshing. He doesnt understand the salaries or other business aspects of the game, so to him it still is an amazing sport. Living near the Oakland A's who still have affordable tickets and some access to players is also a big plus. We have been to spring training, to the A's fanfest to met some players, and to as many games as possible during the season. However with this said, I doubt we would attend many games if we lived in a high price market and always had to pay $30 for nosebleed seats. $2 seats with $1 hot dogs is a pretty good deal!

When Montgomery (AL) got the Biscuits team 2 years ago, I was ecstatic and have seen 4 or 5 games a year. You can be sure that these guys hustle and put all they've got into each play. Some may not have major league potential but they exemplify what the professional game is all about. Major league owners and players could use a dose of humility.

John

Heck, not everyone can say that they saw the two moderm 350+ game winners pitch, but I can. And I want to see him again, before he makes that grade.

I live midway between NY and Philly, so Ive got a good shot to see him again. But I don't usually bother with the drive, traffic and general circus associated with going into the citys. I have some good minor league ball in Somerset and Trenton, NJ which I attend. That is all I need. Im not a fan of any MLB team.

Heck, I even watched some of the Little League WS, and always watch much of the college World Series. Posted By: joe
This past weekend me and 5 friends went to a Yankees game at the Stadium on Friday, drove to Baltimore on Sat for and O''s game against the A's, and then drove to D.C. for the Nationals-Cardinals game. Those were the first MLB games I'd seen this year.
I live 5 subway stops away from Shea and may hit a game this week. I'd never been to Camden, but after seeing it and the way the architects incorporated everything into the stadium (food stalls, restaurants, bars, souvenir stalls, etc.) I can say that I hope the new Yankee Stadium will be somewhat similar. Don't get me wrong, I'm a lifelong Yanks fan and love Yankee Stadium, but it's a dump compared to Camden. On the other hand, RFK is a hole of a stadium for baseball. Hopefully the new park down there will be a bit better.
We had seats in center field and couldn't even see center field we were up so high.
On another note, we ended the trip in Atlantic City where I won $150 playing blackjack. Part of that went to a fairly crappy T-206 Geo. Davis card. The rest is going to replace my driver's license and wallet which I'm sure some fine citizen of Atlantic City is enjoying right now.

We stank then...there was something charming about going to a 3/4 empty fulton county and sneaking down to the best seats in the house and watching us lose night in and night out. Until i moved away after the '93 season, i had gone to most of the playoff games. Atlanta fans stink. There are two reasons for this. 1: this is a city of transiants - New Yorkers, Bostonians, Philadelphians and such.... I remember watching the Braves play the Cubs and it was like the cubs were the home team during the playoffs! I haven't been to a playoff game since 97 (b/c of college and the price)... When i do go for the games, it's for the love of cotton candy and crappy over priced hot dogs. I still enjoy it, and i'm in a fantasy league with my friends, but it's not like it used to be. I used to watch as many games as i could on TV...now i'll watch it if it's on and there is nothing better to watch. I am taken back by the game today ... so forth and so on.... the games can still be fun but i'm not as passionate.

Regards,
Black Sox Fan

- - - - - - - - -

I'm Smart Enough To Know, There Are A Lot Of People Who Know More Than I Know

BlackSoxFan.com
email me

I watch games on TV almost every night (via the Extra Innings satellite package) and probably attend a game or two every month at Yankee Stadium. I have no problem with what players make today. If you look at what some really bad actors get to make a movie then the baseball salaries don't seem all that that outrageous. I think the real crime in baseball today is not what the Yankee payroll is but how the KC team ownership gets away with spending so little. In my opinion, the current KC owners are just draining the coffers and cheating the fans. BTW, through the satellite package I have taken a likeing to the Twins, Angels and the White Sox. They all play a fun style of baseball.

Posted By: Nick
Dodger Stadium is not a bad place to spend your birthday (my 33rd), especially with Clemens pitching. Due to getting a late start (not my fault), we missed the ceremonies honoring the '55 Dodgers, and got inside in the top of the first inning, but at least I didn't miss the Rocket on the mound. It was also a giveaway day, with scratchoff cards given out to everyone and over 3000 winning cards, and I picked up 2 winners (not from my party, but from cards other people dropped) - a Dodgers World Championship teams DVD and a M&N authentic replica '55 Dodgers jersey. It's only the second Dodger game I've been to this season, but I'm trying to get to some more (as well as an Angel game or two).

Posted By: ErikV
As much as the economics in the game have changed and as big as the steroid issue is rite now in baseball, I've found myself actually going to more games in the past 2-3 seasons than in the previous 10+ seasons. For the third year in a row I've made it to at least one Dodgers, Angels, Padres and Diamondback game. I live 3 miles from Angels Staduim so this in itself helps, but, this is just my humble opinion, even if today's ballplayers are primadonna multi-millionaires, the experience of todays fans are still very similar to the fans that went to a game as far back as the '40's, '50's, and '60's. Being in the stands, watching two teams play enjoying a hot dog, peanuts or the like has always been the essence of going to a baseball game. It's for this love of the game. It's for this reason that I've begun taking my 5 year old son with me to games and hopefully he'll embrace the game with same passion as I once did! Don't forget, that even though teams move, new rules get implimented or new faces appear, there's still someting special about going to and experiencing a day at the ballpark!

I will be at Shea the next 2 days also. I occasionally go to Yankee stadium but parking is horrendus unless you are a regular and know spots to park. It is funny but Steinbrenner wanted to move Yankees to New Jersey as part of a sweetheart deal claiming that the Yankees could not draw in the Bronx. It is funny but if you put a winning team on the field the fans will come.

Posted By: runscott
that I'm going to the double-header today. My buddy has season tickets on the second row in the outfield...and last night he sold me a pair of World Series Tickets.

The strike REALLY turned me off, especially with Glavine being the player rep - when he left Atlanta I started going to games, and now with the 'rookie makeover', there is a lot more energy on the team and they are fun to watch.

Yes, I still go to games - here are my biggest thrills to witness:

1. Sitting behind the camera pit last year to see the Astros win their first play-off series
2. Nolan Ryan's 7th no-hitter
3. 1st game at Fenway - having a sausage outside the park and Tommy John pitched for the Yank-mes
4. 1st game at the Astrodome in 1968 - amazing the 1st time you see a baseball field indoors.
5. Andre Dawson hitting for the cycle at Wrigley
6. Cincinnati clinching the 1986 division at Cincinnati
7. Seeing Harold Baines' number retired at the old Comiskey
8. Freezing my ass off at Candlestick

Posted By: Scott Forrest
I got to the game two hours early, stood in the outfield in the stifling heat trying to catch a batting practice HR. Finally gave up and went back to my seat. The last ball hit by Washington in BP bounced over the fence and rolled to me. I was mobbed as it arrived and ended up with a bloody knee and bruised shins, but the old man and two children I had to fend off suffered more.

Those stories of being able to just casually catch BP HR's before games are bunk, at least in Atlanta.

Posted By: Lee Behrens
I am a total baseball addict. I live 120 miles from minneapolis and attend between 10-12 games a year. locally there is a group of us that split a 4 seat seeason ticket package. When I lived in the area I went to 25-30 games a year.

I enjoy going to ball games because you never know what you are going to see. The last game I went to the Twins won 1-0 and had one hit a home run by Jacque Jones in the bottom of the 8th. One of the greatest games I have ever attended.

I have went on 3 baseball trips to parks heading East, have seen all of them east of us but the new Cincinnati park. The trip are wonderful planning on do more in the future.

By the way, the 2 stadiums in NY are 2 of the worst I have been to, the sad thing though is the Metrodome ranks right up therre.

Posted By: warshawlaw
and with the purplish/orange colored paint globbed everywhere in layers an inch thick it looks like an old hooker trying to get noticed. Haven't been to Yankees Stadium since 1976. Of all the parks I've been to (maybe 7-8) I'd have to say that Dodgers Stadium still ranks right up there with the best. The food isn't great and it doesn't have the gimmicks of modern stadiums like the BOB or the Jake but the stadium is still elegant and pleasant to visit. Just wish that they had a major league ballclub to play in it. L.A. Angels--I wish...

Posted By: Betty
Hi Julie! Yes, we did have fun at the party...
I'm an Oakland A's Season Ticket Holder. Go to 70 + gmes at the Coliseum a year. Also go to 2 weeks of Spring Training in Arizona.. have visited Washington DC, Atlanta, San Francisco this year. See Minor League Ball in Sacramento. The Arizona Fall League. Share the experience with my son and his family--watch my grandchildren have fun at the ball park.
Yes, there's issues with today's game that need to be addressed, but when you get right down to it, as pennant fever starts to catch, isn't it fun to go & watch --look at the other night: Zito vs. Colon, last night, Blanton vs Lackey. I'm not so sure that George can buy his way to a championship ring this year. Bottom Line, if you love the game, you love the game.....

Posted By: jeremy wagoner
this season i've been to to three games. mets/cubs at wrigley, reds/diamondbacks at cincy, & brewers/giants in milwaukee. there is no feeling that compares to being at a big league park/game. it's hard for me to understand the people who collect baseball cards that don't care for the game anymore. to me, it's the game that keeps me collecting. my love of the game is what drives me to spend the extraordinary amounts of money to buy the cards that i love. albeit, produced more than 75 years before this season.

Posted By: Bob Rousseau
Don't go as much as I used to now that the Mariners have gotten painful to watch- but I was there last night when the old guard (Randy Johnson) met the new guard (Felix Hernandez) and it was beautiful thing to watch. By the end, Hernandez gave up 2 solo HRs, and that was it as far as scoring on either side went- but the kid is all of 19 and he also had the same number of Ks as Randy- 7. At least watching games once every 5 days in Seattle will now be enjoyable.
