Posted By: Scott Thompson
While it pales in comparison to most of the collections on this board, I have put my low grade T206 collection on Photobucket if anyone is interested. The "slideshow" takes about half an hour, but you can also look at the card indivdually by clicking on them.

http://photobucket.com/albums/y133/scottopotamus/

Scott

Posted By: mike mullins
Hello,

Great collection! My starter set is about where yours is -- I have about 200, all lower-end cards, mostly commons.

Unlike your set, however, just about all mine are ungraded. I think yours look VERY nice in the SCG holders, but wasn't it awfully expensive to get them all graded? As someone on a limited card budget, I'm inclined to save the money for more cards...

Do you feel that having the cards graded enhances their value? I'm certain that this is the case for higher-end cards, and also for cards that are often counterfeited (CJ's, e.g.), but what about lower-end cards?

I'm not criticizing your decision at all -- in fact, I'm considering it. I'd just like to hear your thoughts and rationale (and any one else's on the board, for that matter).

Thank you!

mm

Posted By: dennis
mike i'm the same as you.grading cost $.i'm on a budget.so i find ungraded cards are cheaper to buy and would rather spend my $ on more cards.i have bought many graded cards. all my 50's and 60's stuff i have cracked out as my sets are in 9 pocket pages. i have never sent a card in to be graded, but i do like the look of the sgc holders so i might take the plunge and send some of my low end pre war t/e's to sgc. as of now i just put all the better pre war cards in the lucite holders. i do wish somebody would start selling the black backgronds for lucite holders (t and e cards).

Posted By: T206Collector
....in dribs and drabs. I just went to the East Coast National and met with a gentleman from SGC. I brought the T206's that I have not had graded by SGC yet. The SGC rep went through my collection with me and let me know which ones he thought would grade a 3 or higher -- about 60 or so cards. Any cards that do not grade a 3 (or a 2 in case of Southern Leaguers/HOFers), they will refund a little over half the grading price. So, it wasn't too bad.

If you have a bulk submission of T206 cards, you should call ahead to SGC and ask whether you can do something similar. It will save a lot of money and disappointment.

I like the look of the cards in SGC holders very much. I like the SGC set registry. I think they're the most consistent grader of T206 cards in the market. And if I ever upgrade a double, then the cards sell for a lot more in the holder. That $15 T206 common in VG condition, slabbed for $8 will normally sell for at least $30. It's not a huge profit one card at a time, but it adds up.

Posted By: Scott Thompson
Most of the cards I have were bought "raw" and then sent to SGC for slabbing. I have been very pleased with their grading. I am coming to the end of the commons and will now have to pony up for low end HOFers and Southern Leaguers.

From a strictly monetary standpoint, it probably doesn't make much sense to have low end cards graded, but I like the consistency of having all of my cards in T206’s SGC holders. Call me the "Anal Retentive Collector"! (R.I.P. Phil Hartman) Even a very low end card looks nice in and SGC slab. (Ditto for PSA and my ’55 Topps AA.)

Scott

Posted By: jackgoodman
T206collector - sounds like you got SGC to give you a pregrade like GAI offers (only GAI charges $5 each for the service). It would be great if SGC also offered a pregrade service for a fee, whereby you sent your card in for a pregrade. If you agreed or liked the grade, you have them slab it for an extra fee. But, if they are willing to do it for free --- I'm on board.

Posted By: Scott Thompson
Why the Gilbert Gardner and Nate Colbert collection....?

Well, someone has to collect them!

I assume you glossed right over the Jared Wells collection as well.

I am a Colt and Padres fan. Jared Wells and Gilbert Gardner are both local boys from Brazoria County, Texas.

As for Nate Colbert...he was the Padres first pseudo-star in the mid 70's.

Scott
