Posted By: Don J
Hypothetical question for all you card graders out there. Since paper loss seems to knock a card down to Good condition at best, when does chipping stop being chipping and when does it start being paper loss?

Posted By: dennis
i think the term chipping should only be used if a tiny amount of paper flakes off the card around the edges(border) of the card, and is hard to notice on first inspection. if you see it right away it's paper loss.

It's kind of like being a little pregnant. You either are, or you aren't.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

It's something that could be used in an item description for a major auction house. For example:

....the amount of paper chipping barely exceeds 25% of the frontal surface area but as can be seen in the scan the 75% that remains exhibits the finest clarity and image quality and could be considered near mint to mint condition if not for the minute amount of paper chipping....

I used to have an e93 Matty with even more chipping than what the Joss has, but occurred in the background area, so if you weren't familiar with the set, you would think the chipping was clouds.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

Posted By: steve k
My understanding of "chipping" in baseball card language refers to the slight paper loss around the corners and edges due to wear. Anything other than that probably should be classified as "paper loss"

Yes, technically with that Joss the paper may have somehow "chipped" away, but the location and extent of it in my view should be called "paper loss"
