Posted By: Steve
I love this site... especially since I know very little about vintage cards. Is there any possibility that this card is authentic? It was handed down to me.
any advice would be very helpful. I was thinking of handing it down to my 5 yr old when he gets older.

Posted By: John
Steve;

I do not believe it too be authentic, the wear is not consistent with normal Mayo wear. Looks to be some sort of reprint from what I can tell. But don’t take my word for it have it graded or looked at in person at a local card show. Sorry for any bad news.

Regards.

John

Posted By: leon
Anson's image is not sharp enough to be real. This happens on a lot of fakes/reprints. The infamous Fro-Joys are another series that has poor photo quality on most fakes (or they're in color). Most fakes don't look sharp or look a little "off" in their colors, like this Mayo....regards

Posted By: J Levine
Leon might be correct, the first thing that struck me was the poor image quality of the photo but that might just be your scanner/camera. Just does not look correct. What does the back look like?

Joshua

Posted By: Judge Dred
You pretty much confirmed with the back scan that there is a great probability that this is a reprint. Mayos have black backs. I didn't want to comment after only seeing the front which by the way has that ugly tint that I've seen on reprint Mayos on ebay. But then again you can never tell unless you have the card in front of you. In this case I'd guess about 99.9% that the card is a reprint.

Posted By: J Levine
The Mayo is a reprint...the back really tells the tale. Mayos have black backs and if they do get skinned, it is usually not this clean and if I recall, even skinned ones have a different shade of cardboard color.

Joshua

PS the ruth is fake also

Posted By: leon
Steve emailed me yesterday and all is good. He bought these off of Yahoo. Need I say more? There is no funny business (trolling) going on here as far as I can tell. Steve is going to continue to enjoy the forum and maybe, just maybe, we can get him hooked on pre-war cards like we are. regards all

Posted By: Robert
Leon,

If he bought them on Yahoo then why did he lie and say that his grand father gave him these cards. That is strike one, I still think he is a scammer trying to learn his craft with the expertise of the board. And I think he just conned you in believing otherwise.

Posted By: Steve
Ok... Put this mess to rest. If I were a scammer whatever you call it, I would have probable known that the back of the card was black? Maybe not, all the same. Thanks to those of you that helped and again accept my apologies. I had no idea how serious the card collecting business was.

Dear kohlton777,

Congratulations! Posted By: warshawlaw
Many of us have been burned with bad cards. In fact, I think we should start a museum of forgeries that we've all acquired. Would make a nice display for the next National. We could make up little ID cards like museums use for paintings, but these could include the name, city and ebay ID of the scum who sold them.

Posted By: joe brennan
Would be nice to think you could buy a real 1895 Mayo Plug for $18.99. And an Anson at that. If you really want to collect vintage cards, the best thing you can do is listen to the people here. You will learn alot. One thing I can teach you. DO NOT BUY CARDS ON YAHOO. If they are legit, they will be on e-bay, where all the serious collectors are. 99.99999% of the time you will not find that diamond in the ruff that everyone else missed. Everyone else saw it and passed because it was fake or the seller was a scammer. Welcome the the board. Out

"I had the right to remain silent. I just didn't have the ability" Ron White

Posted By: Steve
Thanks again, any future shopping will be done on Ebay! I have a couple small lots being sold there now. I dont expect you to purchase my mistake, but it is truly a great representation of this forum. Just one other question... wouldnt it take a person alot of investment to be able to sell cards that are not real? Or is it all the digital imaging?

Posted By: Steve
Actually I only purchased (03) cards. So the damage is not so bad I suppose. And to answer leon's question.. It was wrong and I should know, I was looking for a quick answer, figured it would be easier so that I didnt have to respond the history of the card. Simply put I made a Rookie mistake I should know better, Im a Christian and try to raise my kids in the same light. Again Thanks!

Posted By: davidcycleback
The common Yahoo fake is a home computer digital print. If you take a strong magnifyier or handheld microscope, the front image will be made up of a fine multi-color dot pattern (bright color dots). Simplest way to identify a counterfeit of an early card, as early cards did not have that type of pattern.

Buying a few inexpensive coutnerfeits is not a bad deal. It can be an cheap learning experience that leads to smarter purchasing. My collecting motto is that a mistake isn't a mistake if your learn from it and are better.

Posted By: George27
Hello,
I am new to the board but have been reading some of the discussion topics on this forum. It is very interesting and I really wish I had become a member prior to making some costly mistakes. Well I guess that's how you learn.

Anyway, here's a link to a fake 1895 Mayo Anson that I purchased off a Yahoo! auction(automatic red flag as I've come to learn). I'll admit that I'm embarassed that I actually was fooled into purchasing this item along with a few other items.

http://page.auctions.yahoo.com/auction/91369174

David,
Thanks for your feedback in a previous note relative to identifying counterfeit vintage cards. I took a look at this one and it had the multi colored(red, green) dot pattern. I also noticed that the text on the name was solid in the center but also showed the multi colored patterns around the edge of each letter.

I'm looking forward to joining the forum and learning from the folks here. Thanks.

George
