Posted By: Scott B
The show was great. I arrived at around 4:30 and busy scanning every table and done the whole floor at around 8:30. There were a lot more vintage materials than last year. Mastro displayed the whole Frank Nagy collection and it was unbelievable especially the condition of them. They will be available in their Dec auction. I guess it is time to save up $$$ now. However, IMO, his T206 Wagner was obviously overgraded...four rounded corners and graded GAI 3.5???

Since they haven't been graded, Mastro has a sign saying Nagy's collection will not be removed for viewing.

What stuff is "moving" ?

WE NEED MORE PICTURES !!!!!

If the Nagy collection is as nice as the photo in the posting shows, Mastro will have to do a separate catalog just for that - and it will take in millions of dollars !!! Who now has a better collection than what Frank Nagy had ? Marshall Fogel, maybe ?

This was way before the grading
industry started. I would never question Frank Nagy's trustworthiness.

In the current environment in this hobby I can appreciate your concern.
I would guess Bill will have graded at least all the "big ticket" cards.
The entire collection is just too enormous to have it graded in
its entirety.

Posted By: Bob Rousseau
I can't even imagine the thrill of being able to see all those great cards in one place. Looking at a Halper, etc. catalog is great, but actually being able to eyeball it all together? All those CJ's with Honus on top- sorta reminds me of those 'grab bag' Santa packs someone repackaged of late 50s Topps - what's underneath the top card!? Just those couple of photos made me want to move the camera around and see more!

Posted By: Anonymous
I am pretty sure Mastro would grade Nagy's cards before they add them in their Dec auction. Mastro just got Nagy's collection recently and I guess they don't have time submitting them to PSA or GAI yet.

I don't grade my cards but I would think the E94(??) Cobb should be an 8 at least. E90-1 Joe Jackson around PSA 5 or 6. T206 Cobb back would be a 1 due to two spots of paper missing on the front.

May be just me.... I noticed Terry K. has less impressive stuffs this yr. But I don't collect 19th century stuffs so I could be wrong.

I guess we don't normally post pics of what we have seen in the National (at least not pics from the showcase). After I posted those pics and everyone wants to see more pics

Posted By: andy becker
the show is pretty good. nice selection of vintage material. i was there wednesday from 4-9 and today for a couple more hours. i picked up some neat football cabinets that i should post while leon is away . tik has nice stuff, as always. i didn't see the nagy collection, but i will tomorrow. sgc's display is unreal, too many high grade cracker jacks to list.....highlighted by an sgc 98 joe jax. and, my favorite the sgc 96 national chicle bronko nagurski. the crowds were pretty good size for a thursday afternoon. the weekend may be nuts. leon and scott's table is very cool. thanks again for the mello mint, leon!

Posted By: Patrick McHugh
Just and i mean just got home from the show. Was there the last 3 days. Pre- war is on fire. Talked to one dealer 2 hours into the show. He had pre-war up into the 70s. 23,000 dollars in sales all pre-war. Another dealer, old judge kelly 9 sold, old judge delehanty 7.5 sold. I noticed that high grade or rare no matter what grade is hot. The Nagy collection is nice, very nice! Crowds were ok but i think the weekend will be better. For me the best part is meeting so many great people.

Posted By: Jerry
Scott and Leon had a nice variety of cards available. There was a Dave's Vintage Cards from CA that had a ton of OJs, both raw and graded. I thought the Thursday crowd was kind of light, but all the dealers I asked said that the show was going pretty well.

Not much in the way of T205s and T200 Fatimas. But lots of interesting memorabilia. Saw an 1887 scorecard signed by Harry Wright.

Posted By: Bruce MacPherson
I attended on Thursday and found a relatively decent selection of E cards. Scott B and Gary N had a good amount and I was able to get a few cards from each. A saw a few 94s, but the prices are getting obscene. 90-2's and 3's were scarce but I was able to get a 90-3 Schulte from Scott. Gary had lots of 95s and 97s that I wanted but my money was gone after buying Ruth and Gehrig 33 goudey cards. Gary, if you have any of the 97s left, let me know.

A real nice guy who had some of the best looking high grade 97s and other caramels that I have ever seen. I dont believe the high grade cards were for sale-but I probably could not have afforded them even if they were.
Posted By: warshawlaw
An interesting show. It was way better organized and in a much better facility than Cleveland. Anything pre WWI is on fire. Prices were much higher than last year and dealers were not moving on them much. Inventory seemed lower than last year. Those who did negotiate, or who had inventory that was not repriced recently, had their stuff gobbled up by dealers before the show even opened. The show was picked clean on set-up day except for full retail sellers and sellers with stuff that was just hard to go through. I heard lots of "you just missed it; another dealer bought it" stories and I was there on friggin' Wednesday evening! Most of the good prewar deals I got were from soruces that either hadn't updated large inventory prices or who had stuff buried in unappealing piles. I came home with a lot of cards, but nothing earth-shattering. It was more of a fill in the holes show. I did find some really great boxing stuff this year (unlike last year) but that's O/T. Some picks:

E135 Collins McCarthy McGraw
E105 Mello Mint Lajoie (thanks John Billingsley)
E90-1 Chance, Collins, Clarke
several 1930 and 1931 Zeenuts commons in ex-ex+
W517 Heilman [sic] and Wilson
W517 Mini O'Doul, Vance, Klein
1949 Japanese bromide O'Doul (thanks Gary Engel)
1926-29 PC back exhibits Scott and Meusel
1931 Exhibit 4 0n 1 Lazzeri-Dickey-Pennock-Coombs ad back
1922 Exhibit Ross Young [sic]
W cards of Kid Gleason and Grover Alexander
1947 Signal oil Ernie Lombardi
1952 Mother's Cookies O'Doul
1920s AZO PC of Christy Mathewson and Harry Greb (middleweight champ)

I also picked up a stack of exhibits about a foot tall.

The social scene was great. Put lots of names to faces. Went to dinner the 1st 2 nights at a fine steak house with several board members. Kudos to our peerless leader for the party on Friday night--very well attended (wait till someone posts the group photos), good food. We are getting old, though--most of us found the bar too noisy to stay at and went back to the hotel for drinks. I understand that some of the auction houses had some nice events but being a low-roller, I wasn't at those.

Next year we are kicking around the idea of an auction at the dinner for N54 attendees.

Posted By: tbob
Since my other post dealt more with personalities, this will be strictly cards. The one common complaint was that there were way too many buyers and not enough cards. I bought a nice graded M116 Vic Willis from Tom Witek and a tough, tough graded M116 Rebel Oakes from him which wasn't at the show. Tom's prices were reasonable. I picked up a PSA 2 Honus Wagner blue background from Scott B. which looked much better than a 2, nice eye appeal. That was it for Sporting Life cards. Scott was the only dealer who had more than a handful and most had none. Sporting Lifes, alas, are starting to dry up just like everything else. Caramels were almost non-existent. I bought an SGC 60 Evers and 60 Wiltse from the E95 set and a handful of E97s in 20s and 30s for decent prices from Gary N. The E98s were simply not there. A few, mostly trimmed or overpriced. E94s? Fuggetaboutit! 4 cards in the whole frigging hall. A trimmed red Evers, an SGC 40 Turner which sold for $475, a high grade red Wagner which I didn't see and an authentic trimmed olive Lord which will be in an auction. That's it. You can say all you want about the scarcity of the other caramel card sets but the E94s have dried up. Period. Good luck bidding on Nagy's. I talked to Doug Allen and the E94s will be graded. Cobb (gold) will probably be an 84 or better. The rest of the group of 23 may be sold in one lot. (Horrors!) The Wagner and Young may be sold separately if they grade high enough but look for most in one lot. That will kill the average collector. We can only look for someone to buy it, break it up and sell them individually on ebay, card by card.
On the E97s, there was a Rossman in PSA 2 which sold for $500. No I didn't misplace a decimal place. Low to mid grade caramels flew out of the dealer's display cases at much higher than current book or ebay prices. E90-1s were relatively scarce also.
As far as the tobacco cards go, T210s are getting ridiculous. Commons in vg to vgex in Series 1 and 2 were going for $75 to 85 each. There were no scarce back T207s to be found. Of the 60-70 toughies, I didn't didn't see a single one. I saw some commons though in mixed condition. Going for more than they do on ebay. Tons of T206s. I disagree on the T205s. I thought there were a lot of them, especially in very low or very high grade. Not much in the way of vgex to exmt, either F to G/VG or NRMT. Both were overpriced in my mind.
There were some E93s and I was able to buy some at decent prices. I bought a Chance in PSA 4 for $300, a G/VG Jones for $30. I thought the E93s of all the caramels were the most plentiful and best bargains.
Lots of Old Judges. Some priced out of sight but some priced about what they sell in auctions but generally more than they sell for on ebay.
It was a seller's market, pure and simple. Dealers are having a tough time replenishing their stock and so are raising their prices. Although I received a nice profit on the E98s I sold on ebay, had I taken them to National I really could have made a killing.
Posted By: warshawlaw
You ever notice that there are some dealers who do not seem to sell anything? In Cleveland I found a dealer with some exhibit cards I wanted but his prices were outlandish and he had no interest in negotiating so I skipped his table. He was there again in CHI with the same cards, same prices and same no-sales.

OJ Simpson was there. His appearance was unannounced, probably to avoid an asset seizure action by the families of the people he murdered. Lots of people were going $100 a pop for sigs and pics with him. I guess the old adage is true: publicity is publicity as long as they spell your name right.

There was a full table of hookers, er, Playboy playmates. I am pleased to note that they were doing no business I could see.

Speaking of hookers, four of us shared a cab ride to the dinner with a cabbie who was bound and determined to get us drugs and hookers for the night. He kepytpressing us to take strip club cards and offering us some "real dessert" after dinner. I was tempted to tell him we were in on a bible conference.

I spent most of my time stopping and talking to dealers and collectors I had not seen in 15 years or more. I saw a lot of cards I would like to have bought, but this was more a trip about meeting people than buying cards for me.

It didn't take long before it was just like old times. Once I had a made a lap around the place and people knew I was around, I got asked to check some things out for authenticity and and just general brain picking for some ofthe obscure knowledge I have. Posted By: leon
You pretty much got it. Each night I, and several others, went back to the Sofitel (a nice hotel across the street from the National and across the street from where Scott B. and I were staying) and had a few cold ones. I think it was a big mistake for any auction house not to be there. There will be an exciting consignment in Mastro's Dec. auction because they made the trip...and were as hospitable as ever. Bill Mastro wanted one of my cards for consigment and made a little concession but I wasn't interested. With things that transpired, and all things considered, they got a cherry in the end......regards
