Posted By: Chris Counts
1. 19th Century — 1888 scraps — When I was kid in the 70s, I found a Sam Thompson and a Deacon White in an antique store. Now they're one of those things I wished I never traded away. Amazing, colorful images.

2. 1900-1920 — Turkey Reds — My choice for the most appealing set of all. The greatest players of the dead ball era, oversized, on thick cardboard, in action poses, in vivid color, with striking detail and bathed in a golden, otherworldy light. Honorable mention to the Obaks.

3. 1921-WW2 — ? — This is a tough call. 1933 Goudey, 1934 Diamond Stars and 1941 Play Ball are all classic sets. Personally, I like several of the Wheaties sets of the late 30s just as well as the others, especially the ones in color and the ones with the baseball tips.

4. Post WW2 — I know it's not vintage, but I can't resist — 1948 Signal Oil, 1950-53 Bowman, 1952-53 Mothers Cookies, 1956-57 Topps, 1959-61 Morrell Meats, 1958-62 Bell Brand and 1967 Topps.

Goudey really slacked off on the artwork with those cards.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

Posted By: Chuck R
As requested, I've attached scans of some of my favorite pre-war nonsports sets. Dare Devils are somewhat tough to find. Made by National Chicle, you can probably see some similarities in color and design with the Diamond Stars set. Tootsie Circus cards are scarce, but I love the colors and subjects. The R21 Believe it or Not set by Wolverine Gum (whose only other set was the equally strange and rare Strange True Stories set) have odd designs and stories. The low numbers 1-24 pop up on eBay. The high #s 25-48 are some of the rarest cards of the 30's, sports or nonsports.

Posted By: Adam J. Baxter
There are so many nice sets, but these are the ones that stand out in my mind.

1. N321 S.F. Hess California League
2. D310 Pacific Coast Biscuit
3. 1953 Bowman Color

Although they aren't on my list, I'd have to add all three of the T212 Obak sets as a runner-up. One of the nicest series in all of baseball card collecting.

Posted By: Bob Rousseau
Obaks, E92s, E95s, N162 Goodwin champions are some of my favorites.

T218 Champions also has some interesting images (some of the boxing, billiards, bowling, golf, and the other athletics)- there are some good 'orange sky' images in these, too.

Posted By: Scott Elkins
regarding the fronts (all the E92's and E101's look the same). However, I was once one of those type card and "back" collectors. So, I have to go by the back as well (and those Croft's Cocoa backs are COOOOOOOOOOOOOL - wouldn't trade one for all the VAM's in the world!).

BTW - I meant to tell you this. You might want to call Fritsch cards. Even though he overgrades, he has a couple of E101 Knight cards. In the E92 and E101 series, Knight has to be the TOUGHEST common of all!!!!!!!!! Get that one, and the rest of the set will be down hill for you.

Posted By: Chuck R
Can someone verify for me that those nonsports scans I put up yesterday are visible? I'm here at work and can see them fine, but at home yesterday I couldn't view them...I tried two different computers and two browsers (IE and Firefox) and just saw a red "X". I know this isn't that big a deal, but it's the first time I have tried to upload an image and would like to know for future reference. Just in case there is a problem, I've put the pictures on a web page. Here's the link:

http://www.longwood.edu/staff/rosscd/net54.htm
