Posted By: Bob B.
Does anyone happen to know what the location was for Rod Carew's 1980 Fleer card. I belive it was his first or second year with the Angels. The mountians in the back ground caught my attention, certialy is not spring training in Florida. Not sure where Angles had there Spring Training in 1980.

I know this is an odd question, but maybe someone knows here.

Thanks
Bob

Scan of card attached.

Posted By: Chris Counts
My dad used to take me to spring training games in Palm Springs during the early 70s. Palm Springs is in a desert, but it's surrounded by huge mountains. The highest peak, San Jacinto is about 10,000 feet high and often covered with snow.

There are a number of Topps cards with the same mountains in the background going back as far as 1962 ... by the way, if Rod's picture was taken in the Alps, why is he wearing home uniform? (just joking ...)

Posted By: JimB
You all are so absorbed in vintage stuff that nobody noticed that the card is a 1981 Fleer, not 1980. 1981 was Fleer's first year of making cards after the haitus. I know this because it was my last year of buying packs. Got frustrated with 3 different sets.
JimB

Posted By: Bob C
I live in Palm Springs and those are definitely the San Jacinto mountains. Still some snow but melting fast what with 100+ daily temps this past week on the valley floor.

Posted By: Bob B.
I thought that was a little far fetched on the "Alps" location. The consensus has it.... Palm Springs. I wonder if any other Angel cards from the 1981 Fleer set have a similare backdrop? I guess I will have to dig some up and look. Thanks For all the replies and sorry this was not a pre WW2 card topic.
