Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

I did complete a T206 set (minus Wagner, Plank, and "Doyle")
several years ago. I have sold it in recent years. But, I still
have quite a few duplicates, including my favorite HOFers;
and, the basic 16 backs, and my 5 - Cobbs (one has an Orange
background.

I have a question of you, regarding your Harry Pulliam pix ?
I recently got this item and I am wondering what issue it is
from ?

The reason I got him is because I am putting together a type
collection of all the "characters" that were involved in the
1904 "World Series that was not".

Forget the "Babe Ruth Hex" on the Red Sox all these years.
Before Ruth was the "Harry Pulliam, John Brush, John McGraw"
hex on the Red Sox when the NY Giants refused to play the Red
Sox for the 1904 World Series Championship. The arrogant Giants
just declared themselves the Champs. It is a very interesting
story, check it out.

Posted By: T206Collector
...I am going after the O'Hara, since I picked up with Demmitt last weekend, and I think Magie is within striking range. The Big 3, in my mind, are Wagner, Plank and Doyle, and I will feel "complete" when I get there without them.

Unfortunately, I had to sell a number of cards (9 to be exact) to afford the Demmitt and a Ty Cobb Green back, which I also just purchased, so I am a little short presently. If memory serves me, I just need:

Magie
Elberfeld Washington Portrait
O'Hara St. Louis
Cobb Red and Bat Off
Johnson Pitching
Young (one hand and glove showing)

...and then the 9 I parted with last weekend that I need to get back:

Both Keelers
Wallace
Chase Pink and Dark Hat
Seymour Batting
Meyers Portrait
Cicotte
Baker

So what does that make me? I guess, 17 shy of a picnic. But getting closer...
Posted By: leon
Not to get personal here but let's keep this thread to who has finished the T206 set minus the big 3-5 cards. I promised Lee I would help keep this thread focused. Asking other questions not related to his should be put in another thread. You have some valuable info and your participation is greatly appreciated but please try to help me here. The other thread got way off topic. So the question remains.....who on the board has finished the T206 set (minus the big ones)? Any off topic of this question, in this thread, might get deleted. Sorry to sound harsh ......thanks ya'll

Posted By: Tom Boblitt
Minus about 40 here in Louisville........have most of HOFers but shy on some Southern Leaguers and a few tougher 'commons' along with Dahlen, Brown and some of the variations. Have all the Cobbs. Not going to get into the 'completeness' argument although I would consider it complete at either set-big 3 or set-big 3-Demmitt/Ohara. Okay, I got into the argument. Anyway, I will not have big 3 unless some wayward great grandson of someone walks in with a big collection with the big 3.

Posted By: Lee Behrens
Ted, Attach your email to your response to the thread and it is easy to respond off the thread. Also as Leon said i am looking for the set minus the cards up to the Demmitt and O'Hare.

As said earlier great accomplishments getting close, but your not quite there. Email me when you get there and I will add you to the total.

Jim B. , Does that mean you are a Wagner owner? I find it interesting to know which of the Big 5 plus Doyle (not sure if it counts) each person needs.

Thanks for the responses, are there more?

Lee

Posted By: JimB
Lee,
Are you totalling up the number of complete sets out there? If so, please share the numbers with us. Thanks. Does anybody want to venture a guess as to how many complete sets are out there (minus the big 5/6). I would guess there are probably 50 or so out there.
JimB

Posted By: Dave
I'm missing 19 cards to get up the the big 6:

Wagner
Plank
Magie
Doyle NY Nat'l
Demmitt St. L
O'Hare St. L

3 of these are Southern League, Lipe, Revell, and Sid Smith.

Mostly expensive cards left, Cobb bat off, Matty port lead the list. I'm generally looking for grade 4, but have many 3 and look at those as well. Would like to upgrade about another 20, but that is lower priority.

Posted By: jay behrens
I am 498 cards away, but thena gain, I'll never get close. I would guess that there are closer to 100 complete sets minus the big 5. There are a lot collectors out there that have been around a long time.

Jay

I've just reached Upper Lower Class. I am now officially a babe magnet for poor chicks.

Posted By: Bill
Lee,

I lack the Wagner, Doyle, Plank, O'Hara, and Magie. All my cards are graded by SGC and can be viewed on their website. Let me know if you find out how many "near" sets there are. Posted By: Darren_Duet
I agree with Jay that there are greater than 50 near sets out there--I'd guestimate about 100 to 200. I'm 44 shy of complete.

Posted By: Scott
Thanks to Julie, I finished my T206 set. But the Plank she once owned is in a GIA 2 holder now.
I thought it could possibly come back a 2.5 or maybe a 3. I think Mark M. said at one point in time it was in a PSA 3.

Regards Board,

Scott

Posted By: BRIANKW

I have owned everyone, but Magie, Wagner, and Slow Joe Doyle, and hope to own all of them someday. Maybe tomorrow when I win the Mega Millions Lotto for 168 Million.......

I am currently building a set with only the rare or semi rare backs, so I doubt I will ever "complete" my mission, but at least I will always have something to look for.

Be well Brian

PS Jimb, Can you post a scan of your Wagner????

Posted By: Scott M
Hi Lee,

Congratulations on your accomplishment!

You can add one more to your total as my set is "complete" minus the big six as well.

Lucky for me, T-206 was my "first love" in vintage cards and my dad and I worked on it for several years back in the late 1970s until reaching that stage of "completeness" in the very early 1980s.

One of these days I may revisit the set and add the Demmitt and/or Ohara but theres just too much other vintage material out there that holds my interest.

I'm more or less happy with the set where its at knowing that I will likely never own a Wagner, Plank or Doyle...

Scott M

Posted By: Anonymous
Just wondering... For those who have a "complete" set that includes Plank and Magie, what are the condition of them? If they are trimmed or altered and you are not going to upgrade them, would you still consider you have a "complete" set??

Posted By: JimB
As someone who does have the Plank and Magie (unaltered or trimmed in any way), I would say that if somebody has the set but those two are trimmed, it is still complete. Maybe that would lower the grade, but it does not mean the person does not have an example of every card (minus the Honus of course). A trimmed example of those cards may make competing the set more affordable.
JimB
