Posted By: jackgoodman
Another thread mentioned a card coming back ungraded with "evidence of trimming."

So I was wondering if any of the grading companies have the ability/experience to differentiate between "evidence of trimming" and just a legitimate "short cut?"

And will they grade the "short cut" but apply some sort of penalty or qualifier?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Two years ago I submitted my really crisp 1949 Bowman Stan
Musial to PSA (at Philly Show) for grading. They rejected it -
"evidence of trim". I told the PSA floor "honcho" that I had
this card in my collection for more than 20 yrs. (long before
anyone really thought of trimming cards). He became very bel-
ligerant and threaten to have me thrown out of the Show ! I
walked away and submitted it to SGC. They gave me an SGC 88
grade which made me very happy. You figure it? I can't, other
then to feel that this grading business is very arbitrary.
Having been turned-off by the hassle with the PSA personnel,
I no longer subscribe to any grading service. Instead I am
content to be able to TOUCH - CARESS - SMELL my sports
cards. I feel I can do just as good a job grading them and
most important, I can accurately discern whether a card is
within it's manufacturer's size tolerances. Something that
PSA (and others) has definitely demonstrated it cannot do !

Posted By: Bob Marquette
I submitted a gorgeous blue background M116 Bresnahan with clean back to either SGC or GAI, can't remember which now. I thought it had a chance for a NMT grade, it is that nice. Instead it came back "cut from sheet"??? I emailed them and asked them what that meant and they said that although it was a beautiful card it was cut from a sheet. I said "aren't all cards cut from a frigging sheet?" and they said yes but they could tell the difference in a 1910 cut and one cut later.
These guys need to be working for CSI. This presupposed that someone had an original 1910 M116 Sporting Life sheet and cut the cards out exactly to specifications??? Anyone have any clue what a NMT M116 sheet would bring in mastro??? A ton. The whole thing sounded goofy to me...
