I'll start it off:

$230,000

Chris
Posted By: scott brockelman
i would guess more people on this board would have asked who's billy crystal? as we are a bit more disassociated from the real world somewhat more than others it seems.

keith olbermann is a founding member of the hobby as we know it. setting up at shows as a teenager in the 1970's and during the 30 years following has assembled one of the finest vintage collections extant. and in his spare time was one of the original ESPN co anchors and after a gamble on the big time has settled in as a regular on MSNBC with varied programs.

Posted By: Paul
I won't venture a guess. But I think Robert Edwards' edstimate of 40-60K is quite modest.

Posted By: Jim Clarke
It will come down to three bidders and the final price will be 48K with juice. I think the winner is already determined as well... whoops!

Posted By: dan mckee
I tried not to read this post but had to. This card is a very sore spot with me. In 1991 pop found about 9 News cards in a t206 collection he bought. 8 were the 1910 version and 1 1914 - Ruth. He saved 1 1910 for a type, sold the other 7 for $35 each and sold the Ruth for $1000. Obviously, I will never be able to replace this card. It is partly my fault, I was busy chasing skirts and wasn't as active in the hobby at the time or pop would have gladly saved all of them for me. Yes I am still sick over it but there isn't much I can do about it. I have considered jumping or even an overdose of sleeping pills. Dan.

Posted By: Hal Lewis
Dan:

Would it make you feel any better if I told you that I bought the 1914 Ruth from your Dad for $1,000...

and then traded it for a Gem Mint rookie card of the "next" Babe Ruth: Joe Charboneau ?

The first time we saw him, it was obvious that he had a unique sense of humor. That experience was the springboard for ESPN.

“A smooth sea never made a skilled mariner.” - English Proverb

Posted By: Josh K.
Hal,

What a great deal! That Charboneau rookie is such a sweet card - can you post a scan? I think it ranks right up there with the Mark Fidrych (sp?) rookie card that I got in trade for the walter johnson ramley that just sold for 7k+.

Posted By: chris cathcart
So far, we've got:

300k
230k
135k
135k
80k

Also, this may not be the card that I was thinking of that sold in the late '90s. One source says it's the same; another says that the card sold was a red print one, at a Sotheby's auction I believe.

With only 8 of these around I'd expect some huge results. Weren't the M101's going for hardly over $10k in the late '90s in NM-MT 8?
Posted By: Hal Lewis
I know it will sell for more than $80k...

because if it is at that level, I will buy it just for the fun of it.

Maybe minor league cards are good to have after all?

My guess is: $175,000

Posted By: Hal Lewis
Paul:

The only reason I would spend that much on a baseball card is because I truly think I could sell it for more later.

No different to me really than an IRA account... except a lot more fun and enjoyable!

The funny thing is... I drive a simple old pick up truck because I can't bring myself to spend any real money on a VEHICLE that will DEPRECIATE over time instead of APPRECIATE!!

Let's just say that I am investing in what I love to collect.

Posted By: Glenn
I predict $125,000. But next time it (or another in the same condition) goes up for auction, it'll break $200,000. Anyone have any predictions how long we'll have to wait to see another one offered?

Glenn

Posted By: Glenn
Indeed. Let's take the median/modal value of the predictions on this thread -- $135,000. Will we see another one sold within the next two years?
