The Old Judge cards (N172) provide some great photos of
players with gloves. I've identified several confirmed images of players
with gloves. I also have identified several Old Judge cards that may
feature players wearing gloves, however due to limited resolution or reduced
image size in viewing the images on-line, I can't tell for certain. I'm
hoping you or your other forum contributors might have some of these cards
and could look to see if the player is wearing a glove or gloves. The list
is as follows

McTammyCF
Traffley, Billcatcher
Greercatcher
Cub Stricker2B
West1B
Whitney3B
Connell3B
Crottycatcher
Hallmancatcher
Jantzencatcher
Phillips1B
Leighton, JohnCF
Patton, OwenRF
Schriver, Popcatcher
Brosnan, Timothy2B
Duffe, Home Run2B

FOr the catchers I would also like to know if the player is wearing 1 or 2
gloves or a mask or chest protector. I would also like to know the year of
the card (1887-1889).

Thank you for your time. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

David

Posted By: Rhys
I have a Trafflet with beautiful resolution in which he is wearing a throwing glove and a catching glove. Let me know if you want a scan. I also have a couple of McTammany's but I cant tell. The rest of the ones I have do not have gloves from the list you mentioned.

Rhys

Posted By: J Levine
First from memory...
I know that Jack Clements (the last full time left handed catcher) caught without gloves for the Phillies. He is pictured on most Old Judge cards without gloves in a catching posistion. I do think he is pictured with gloves in a few but rarely used them if I recall.

Pop Schriver (also a catcher for the Phils at times) is pictured both with and without gloves. I can't seem to find my OJ with him in catching posistion but if I recall it does show him with a glove.

Pinkey Whitney 3b is pictured usually without gloves (at least on the four poses that I own--not sure about the one with the dog .

Now going through my Slocum book...

Catchers wearing gear:
Holbert Brooklyn mask/two gloves 1888
Collins NY mask/one glove
Broughton St. Pauls two gloves
Meyers Indianapolis one glove 1887
Lauer Pitts no gloves 1887
Mills Milwaukee two gloves
Kenyon Des Moines two gloves
Clark Washington one glove 1888
Sommers Chicago one glove
Deasley NY two gloves, mask 1887
Farmer St. Pauls one glove
Collins Lowells two gloves, chest protector, mask
Fields Pitts two gloves 1887
Peeples Brooklyn two gloves, mask, chest protector 1887
Gunning A's no gloves

Connell 3b one pose I have a picture of has him not wearing a glove and it is from 1888(I think-hard to read)...

I hope this helps...keep in mind though that Old Judges were studio pictures and were posed. No doubt some players did not want gloves, masks, chest guards, etc. I have also given a very small sample size. I still hope this is helpful...David Levin's find I am sure has many of the players you are looking for and is searchable by name.

-Joshua
