Ty Cobb Brand Tobacco - T-206

However, I want to make sure I'm completely accurate when talking about the Ty Cobb backed cards. From my understanding, the Ty Cobb backed cards never actually went to production or were inserted into the Ty Cobb tin it is believed they were designed for. Instead, they were either produced as a test or handed out along with the tin as a test.<br /><br />Since I want to be 100% accurate with what I say, I am defferring to all of you to correct me in any way, shape, or form with these statements and to educate me!<br /><br />Oops - forgot... Posted By: <b>Richard Dwyer</b><p>I've been collecting boxes for over 10 years now. I've never seen a Ty Cobb slide & shell box, only the tins which go for lots of money. I think it's only a rumor that the cards were in tins, or that they were handed out as promos. I guess we'll never know.

They believe they were given away as promotional items at some type of event. The fact that 5 of the 13-14 known example were found in the same house in GA may lend support for this theory. I can't believe I turned one down for $2500.00........... Of course that's a lot of money for a 14 year old....<br /><br /><br /> Be well Brian

The person mentions that his grandfather smoked Piedmont and eventually the Ty Cobb brand tobacco! Maybe it was only issued in a "test" market or for a very short period of time - explaining the rarity????? Nobody knows for certain. I still feel this was some type of promotional issue that is probably a different animal than T206 - most likely a "regional" issue for GA. However, I still feel that these cards came in the Ty Cobb tobacco tins.

Posted By: <b>HW</b><p>I would think that if they were issued together, then the card would have the bat on pose instead of the red background.<br /><br />I believe Lipset once found the pair together in a collection and may have concluded that they came together. I believe this is where the idea comes from that they were issued together.

Posted By: <b>Scott</b><p>the ad back looks to be referring to "Ty Cobb" as a tobacco brand that is "king" of the tobacco world, not as "Ty Cobb" the human being. Ty Cobb was king of baseball possibly, but not king of the tobacco world. This makes me think it is likely that the card came in the tin, or at least that was the intention.
