Posted By: runscott
This particular Mastro auction has a lot of items that are of museum quality. But if you think about it, many of us possess items that museums would love to have.

Between us, we could put together a pretty nice "Network 54" Virtual museum. Not just cards, but everything.

Posted By: Hal Lewis
I guess John McPhee's parents knew what they were doing when they nicknamed him "BID" ...

since that is apparently the ONLY way to ever get his card!!!

Posted By: Hal Lewis
Thankfully I already have a PSA 5 McPhee card... so I can go to the Penalty Box and sit this auction out!!!

The interesting thing about the card is that it is BEAUTIFUL...

but will NEVER grade higher than an SGC 10 because of the writing.

Thus, if the winner wants it slabbed, it should be done by PSA, because they can just give it an (MK) qualifier.

I think PSA would grade the card PSA 6(mk)... which just sounds much better than SGC 10.

Posted By: Judge Dred
Do you know if Spence and crew authenticated the Gacy signature in the Leland's auction?

If precedence holds true in this auction then the Cal League N172 is going to go for a few dollars more than most of the lots. I liked Lew's 20 year old price guide on the Cal League cards better than today's auction prices. It's just too bad that I didn't pick up any of the Cal League cards back then.

Posted By: John
You guy’s remember this card from ebay? It was the one listed found in a group of toy cars. Someone on the board claimed they had won it, and it was not for sale. However weeks after that claim the owner asked me to make him an offer I offered a very healthy price and never really heard from him again and now I understand why. I’m 99% sure it’s the same card. What do you guys think?

Posted By: Hal Lewis
Sorry Julie, but I wasn't just GUESSING!

I have an OJ card from the EXACT SAME collection with the EXACT SAME Burdick writing on the back:

SGC told me that regardless of HOW NICE the front was ... it could go no higher than a 10 for ANY card with this much writing on it like this.
Posted By: Ben
Doesn't matter what SGC says really, that is one great card Hal!

Your card reminds me of a question I wanted to ask to the board. Is the scarcity of the n172 Wilbert Robinson reflected proportionally in the n173? Could this be said in a more general sense for all n172's and their n173 counterparts? S'cuse my ignorance, I've just always wondered about this.

Posted By: Joe_G.
The last several OJs I sent in for grading all had outstanding fronts but anywhere from a single word to three lines of writing on the back and all graded SGC20-30. I have a couple examples of single line notations (persons name for instance) receiving SGC40 so there is some variance. I believe their rule of thumb falls in-line with the following:

small mark no higher than SGC50
single word/line no higher than SGC40
two lines no higher than SGC30
three lines no higher than SGC20
four or more lines no better than SGC10

These low grades on otherwise beautiful OJs (an issue that many don't even care about back condition) is my main gripe with SGC. I support notations such as MK etc. used by PSA for issues that are blank backed.

Posted By: Joe_G.
The quick and easy answer is no. Unlike N172s which you were at the discretion of what Goodwin inserted with their cigarettes, specific N173s were requested by the consumer (ie consumer decides who they receive). For this reason, popular players of the day such as Kelly, Anson, Brothers, etc are easy. However, players with less popularity including some HOFers that were not popular during 1888 & 1889 can be very difficult.

I believe Robinson was better known from his later years so his cabinet probably wasn't requested in high numbers.

Posted By: George H. Counter
Almost a day since my first post and prices for my wish list items are still very well within reach. I'm sure the N172 CAL league and the Hoboken benefit card will skyrocket before I get a real chance, but dreaming is free!

Do you guys think bidding will cool off for the next few days to heat up at the end?

Was the early heated start normal in mastro auction standards?

Scott, great idea about a network54 online museum. Will contribute if needed

Posted By: Hal Lewis
It will definitely cool off and then heat up again at the end.

The EARLY bidding flurry is typical at Mastro ... because the ONLY way you can bid on an item at the END is to have ALREADY bid on it.

Thus, everyone wants to bid VERY EARLY on EVERY item in which they are remotely interested ...

because they can get in 40 different bids at VERY LOW levels that will NOT get them "stuck" as the high bidders.

In other words, the "ideal" situation would be to go through the ENTIRE auction and be the FIRST bidder on EVERY item. You would NOT remain the high bidder on ANY items...

but you would be free to bid on EVERY item at the very end.

Make sense?

BUT ... according to what Leon was saying yesterday, some people employ the "come out with your best shot" method and make STRAIGHT bids of $5,000 on an item instead of just starting at the minimum bid of $200.

They do this to PREVENT people from being able to employ the "bid while it is low" theory that I discussed previously. The trade off, of course, is that the person has to bid $5,000 and therefore loses ANY CHANCE of winning the item for $3,000 or $4,000, etc.

Posted By: tbob
then the jackass who previously owned it is definitely on my list. I bought the card from him and after several email communications, sent him payment through PayPal. He reniged on the deal. I wasn't sure if it were real or not but was willing to take the chance.
