Posted By: Don Lowe
Hi,
I have a pending payment due to a guy who I have bought a Ty Cobb Green Port for $60. He claims in the auction that he is presuming it a reprint, but continues to hint to me that it is real. Can anyone tell me wheater it is real or anpther forgery. This is the first 206 I have ever bought and am getting it to resell. The link to the auction is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5127920696&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

thanks

Posted By: MW
...but you just bought a reprint. Even if you were not aware of the authenticity of this particular card, take a look at the seller's negative/private feedback and some of the other items he/she is selling -- they provide some very good clues.

Posted By: MW
Don,

Some reprint clues: no factory number on back, cropped and grainy image on front, suspect font, squared off corners, fake staining, and borders of incorrect width.

Posted By: ErikV

Just my personal observation, but the front and back scans are not the same card. The front of the card has rounded corners. The back shows fairly sharp corners. I'm no pro at deciphering authentic cards from reprints, but something's just not rite about this. A T206 Ty Cobb card for $60.00? What's wrong with this picture?

Posted By: bcornell
David included the one for beginning collectors. This seller violates just about every rule there.

There are also several sites in the "Vintage Links" that show many different t206's.

These cards don't sell for $56 in any condition.

Bill

Posted By: Don Lowe
I have looked around and have found a lot of T206 Graded cards w/o #s so I don't think the number is a problem, but I have contacted the seller and am looking for answers regarding the wierd front and back.

Posted By: hankron
Bill's point is about the best. An authentic T206 Ty Cobb can't be bought on eBay for $56.

If the card was genuine, the seller would be begging for you to back out of the deal so he could resell it for it's legitmate hundreds of dollars value. If he gets mad because you want to back out of paying $56 for a T206 Ty Cobb, you know right there that he knows the card is fake.

It's a reprint. If you want to pay $56 + shipping for a reprint T206 Ty Cobb, buy it. If you don't, don't. Don't worry about the seller's feelings if you choose to back out. He knows what he selling ... He the one who made the card!

Posted By: Dave
I am far from the expert on reprints, but when someone tells me a high end card like this is being sold as a reprint, I believe him.

As the card itself: I don't like the stains, though these are better than a lot you can see. The top corners look like the black borders have diaganols on them. Wear on the corners of real cards don't usually get this round without a lot of fraying. The right side of the card is very rounded, the left is straight. They should be very similar. The ebay pictures are bad, masking who knows what.

All of these have some subjective element to them, but the following doesn't:

The Cobb green portrait was first issued as a 150 series. None of these cards were issued in the 460 series. So, the back can't go with the front. The source for this is Lipset's Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards, Volume 3, in his discussion of the T206 series.

Posted By: ErikV

I bought this Cobb card for $50.00 about 15 years ago. That's what a real Cobb card looks like and that's about the condition you'll get for $50.00

Posted By: Adam J. Baxter
Don-
Another red-flag on this card is the seller's own description. He says: " SINCE I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS I'M SELLING". That's funny considering that the title of his own auction is "1909 T206 TY COBB GREEN CARD". It's also interesting that he knows it's a 1909 issue, but then puts it in the Rookies (1950-1959) > 1950-1954 section. These observations, plus all the other ones made by previous posters, point to this as being an obvious miSrepresentend reprint. The folks on this board know what they're talking about when it comes to detecting fake T206's. IMHO, if you pay for this card, you are throwing your money away.

Best,
Adam

Posted By: dennis
that he's selling as a reprint.duh! why bid and not pay.i agree, this seller is a con man and wants to make it look as if he is ignorant, and the card COULD be real. but this seems to be the logic here...i'll pay if it's real,AND WON'T IF ITS FAKE. it would be smarter to ask ????'s first and then scammers like this guy wouldn't list this garbage.but every day there is somebody bidding on scam autions hoping to get a REAL card, and resell it and make profits. sorry but you paid $56.00 for a 2 cent reprint.

Posted By: T206Collector
...one of the reasons I take it so personally when someone bids $50 on an obviously fake Wagner, Plank or Cobb is that they're assuming they have made a great find and that intelligent collectors out there didn't bid on it at that price because they just didn't see it in time.

For all of you new collectors out there, there are hundreds of us that review the ebay listings multiple times a day in order to find value in vintage cards. This is especially true for the very popular T206 set. We are not so stupid as to let a VG-condition Cobb go for under $100. If you are the high bidder on a VG-condition Cobb and the price is under $100, that alone should raise a red flag. Like the $50 Cobb posted above, this current auction shows you what condition your authentic Cobb will be in if you purchased it on ebay for under $100:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5127802301&ssPageName=STRK:MEBI:IT

Posted By: Jermey B
it looks like a $56 lesson. Either that or take a hit with a negative feeback. As dishonest as the seller is he did say that he was selling it as a reprint - hes probably making it sound real so he gets the $56 from you. tough lesson.
