Posted By: barrysloate
All you need to know about the ball is there. We know when the game was played and who participated. What more do you need?

And who is this mysterious board member who is asking you to post all his stuff? I smell a conspiracy.

Posted By: leon
I think he was looking for rarity and value? This mystery person is no one you or I know. The only issue is that he keeps sending 3mb scans done in the wrong format. That is the only reason I am posting for him and he can't do them himself. It's not a secret, his name is Dynarl ....And I will guess it's worth about $300-$500....and is quite scarce. So how did I do?

Posted By: barrysloate
I would say $300-500 is pretty darn close. The downside is it is late for a trophy ball, and the two opponents are not important. Looks like a game for bragging rights between two police forces.

The upside is a beautiful presentation in that glass bottle, superb condition both to the hook that holds the ball (that's the first thing to break) as well as the ball itself, which is also protected of course. And it is painted gold- I think that is a plus as the terms "trophy ball" and "gold ball" are somewhat interchangeable.

Edited to add I assume the color is gold, it's not a perfect scan.

Posted By: Brock G.
$300-$500 seems a little low to me. It looks to be in excellent condition and is presented well. Not many of these floating around either. I'd say $700-$800 conservatively.

Posted By: barrysloate
I'll agree the presentation gives it a little extra cache.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
That is a sweet baseball and I will say that it is worth more than the estimates given already. I'd guess above $1,000. I've seen ribbons and ticket stubs for this game so I think it was a little bit bigger deal than just a pickup game.

Posted By: Rhys
I agree with Dan. I think it is over $1000 by a hair. If this were my baseball I would have a price tag at a show or something of $1500 expecting to be negotiated down to maybe $1200 or so. It might sit there for a long time and may never sell, but I think to the right person it is easily $1000 and probably worth closer to $1500.

Rhys

Posted By: barrysloate
Seems like it's been a good investment. It's gone from $500 to $800 to $1000 in less than an hour!

While I was posting it hit $1200!

Posted By: dynarl
Hi everyone! Thanks for the info on trophy ball bought it at a local auction for $175.00. Wife's Great Granddad was a motor cycle cop in Detroit around this time and there may be a chance he played in the game. I'm not very good with computers and don't know what I am doing. Sorry for the trouble I cause but have a collection and I think there is no better place to find out about it then here. Thanks!

Posted By: Dan Bretta
No problems at all Dynarl. This forum was made for items like that trophy ball...congrats on the great find. Keep an eye out because I have seen other items associated with this contest and adding other items will only enhance the value of the trophy ball.

edited two egregious misspellings before Barry could see them.

Posted By: davidcycleback
They made quasi trophy baseballs and footballs into the early 1900s. Technically, they still make trophy footballs, as you will see painted up NFL game used balls that the team presented to players of the game.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Dynarl, I will try to remember where I saw the ribbon for this game...I think maybe it was in one of the many baseball history/photo/coffee table books that I own. If I can find it I will scan it for you.

Posted By: Clint
Dan, try looking in one of the old Oregon Trail auctions. I believe there was two pinned together plus a small bat tied to it.

My guess on value around $1000. Neat piece.

Clint

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Thanks Clint! I knew I had seen it somewhere. I'm pretty sure I ran across either a ticket stub or program from the game on ebay years ago because I tried at the time to research the game

Posted By: David Atkatz
Barry, the display is not original. I display a number of items, including an Allosaurus tooth and an original Hindenburg girder piece in those same glass-and-walnut cases. They are readily available.

Posted By: Joe_G.
I had the great pleasure of meeting "D" some time ago to view the subject ball. Hello D!

Among other things, D allowed me to study and photograph the ball (see below). I'm glad this thread was started as it did turn up some new information relating to the game (the bat & ribbon). Nothing could be found in the Detroit Free Press and they were pretty good at covering local non-pro games. That ribbon and ball belong together.

There are some condition problems with the ball but it presents well where it is most important. Being a suspended ball, the ball/leather have yielded to time with some deformation. Great ball to a Detroit fan & D is one of the best.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Front Panel

Other Three Panels & Bottom

Posted By: barrysloate
David- that's interesting. I have seen trophy balls in cases that are original. If this ball was put in at a later date then that would affect the value.

Posted By: Joe_G.
I find it interesting that there is no score recorded on the trophy ball. Is this unusual? It would be interesting if a little more information on the game, like who won, could be obtained.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Posted By: Mark
David is correct...

Those display domes are readily available at antique stores, and aren't vintage by any means. I bought quite a few recently for some Bobbing Heads, and just removed the wire. They look and work great!

Posted By: Joe_G.
My third bump over the last several minutes . . .

Anyone else notice the trophy ball is dated on the 5th (at Cleveland) and the ribbon the 6th? Wonder if they played in Detroit on the 6th (home game / away game for each team).

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski
