SPALDING FOOTBALL DIE CUT SCHEDULE 3 1/2" WIDE BY 2 1/4" TALL

I had a boat load of stuff waiting for me at the PO today, all eBay pickups. The one I was most anxious to get was the 17 ¾ tall boxing trophy below. It was made by Dieges and Clust, who most of you probably know made the Spalding trophies. Ive never seen this trophy before, and was taken back by the figure.I know that figure and its German! I've had just the statue before, and I have the same figure on a clock. Actually, there were a series of statues of different sports of this format, thus no doubt all of the same producer. I've had the tennis player, this boxer, and I think I had a track runnerand I think I've see a diver. Anyway theyre all German. So seeing this figure on a Dieges and Clust trophy is remarkable. Dieges and Clust was an American company based in New York City. It would certainly be interesting to learn the dynamics of how D&C came to use a German statue. The finish has a lot of tarnish so I have to look into cleaning it up.Probably because of the condition, I got it reasonable $145.00. However, when I researched it's history a little I learned the Salem Crescent Athletic Club was a long established club in NYC, and that Sugar Ray Robinson came out of it. The trophy is engraved with the following:
POINT TROPHY
SENIOR BOXING
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Met. Assn. A.A.U.
MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
DEC 12TH - 14TH 1932
WON BY
SALEM CRESCENT A.C.

Ive only seen one other Dieges and Clust boxing trophy I guy showed meand thats on my Trophy Room Page http://sportsantiques.com/the_trophy_room.htm
24 tall 1947

Next in the post office was the 14x22 Yale vs. Princeton baseball
broadside below , no date but probably from about the 1930s set me back pretty good$14.50!!!

Then theres a very cool die cut of a football with a Spalding logo, and the Univeristy of Pennsylvania schedule for 1925...3 ½ wide by 2 ¼ tall, $15.00 on eBayI asked Keith Schneider of GasolineAlleyAntiques.com about it and hed never seen one like it..and its his kind of thing..

Posted By: Anonymous
Thanks Mike and Matt...Mark, that's great, congrats....That probably came off a Wilson Trophy. I've always thought it looked like a very young Ruth...in person that is, photos don't do it justice. I got the complete trophy at, I think it was the 1997 National from Dan Knoll...I remember I had to $tep up for it, but I wasn't leaving without it! It's dated 1929...below some shots of mine...plus comparison face shots, that's Walter Johnson on the right.

Posted By: Mark
Thanks, Carlton...

I really believe the statue/trophy depicts Walter Johnson. The follow-through pose is identical to so many pictures I have seen of Johnson pitching. I can see how it resembles a young Ruth, but the nose is all wrong... the Bambino had a much wider/broader nose. Plus, the Babe threw lefty.

Your full Trophy is nearly identical to mine (see below...) I have only seen 4 of these with the base included, and ours are the only two to have this particular style base. I bet the others have had replacement or refurbished wood bases, as ours appear to be original.

I like the statue particularly because the finish is so much different than the Trophy. It is shiny solid brass instead of the darker copper-toned metal finish normally seen (as with our trophies...)

A final question for Carlton (or anyone else who might know...) The Testi Batter/Catcher Statues that just snuck it into your picture above are stunning. Is there a way to tell the originals from the reproductions? Mike H. told me that there were some repros at the National, and I was wondering about the tell-tale signs. Please advise if you can, and thanks so much!

Posted By: CarltonHendricks
Mark, I'm glad you got one with the original base...In honor of your acquisition, I have posted a photo on my TROPHIES page of the example that sold in the 2005 REA auction for $3,250.

On the Testi statues...the repro's are easy to ID, they're cast in bronze, whereas the originals are cast in Galvano. The interesting thing about the repros is that the ones I've seen are pretty nicely cast, with good definition...for being modern, they're pretty nice. Usually modern repro bronzes lack detail. As I recall the repro Testi's have a very dark patina, almost black, and are weighty.
Posted By: Brock G.
Nice Mike. You out sniped me on that one. I thought you did very well with the price though. I hate seeing those that have been re-painted bright orange or green. They look great just like that one you got.

Posted By: joe
Brock, I bought these and they were painted brown, I used goof off and removed the brown paint, this is what was underneath. The good off did not affect the original color. Brown is not the original color.

The 2nd picture are some made into bookends.
The 3rd picture is the brown color of the newer recasts.

Mike, I would check and test on a back part to see if you get the same result.

Joe

Ty Cobb, Spikes flying!
