Posted By: Jerry
I picked this Cabinet up on Ebay tonight and he has what looks like to me a Position Pin on his cap. I was wondering if it is an 1890's Position Pin and if so, what position this guy played.
Thanks in advance
Jerry

Posted By: Brock G.
Its one of the outfield positions. Looks like the writing along the left side is too long to say left or right. I'd say he played center field.
Here is the pin: http://national-pastime.stores.yahoo.net/18cefipopin.html

Posted By: Jerry
Thanks Brock, I thought it was a position pin but didn't know for sure. When I get it, I should be able to tell which outfield position it is.
Then I will have to find the pin to go with the Cabinet.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Nice pickup Jerry...I watched that auction without seriously considering it...I just like to add 19th century photos to my watchlist. I think you got a good deal on it.

Posted By: Randall
Anybody know how long the position player pins were issued? A few months ago I was looking through some old auction catalogs and ran across a lot with the pins still attached to the original sales board and I believe the board was dated 1910. I will post a scan of the catalog pic when I have time.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
There are many different types of the celluloid position pins. I would guess they were manufactured in one form or another from about 1896-1920. I've seen just straight up position pins and I've seen them with advertising for different companies.
