Posted By: Steve Murray
Phil's BST post of the Base Ball Stars Ruth Notebook got me wondering if there are any other collectors out there. Posted By: J Levine
Here is my notebook cover from 1914...I have seen only one other "Crack Batteries" cover (Bender and Thomas)and have heard of a Matty cover but have never seen it. I have never seen another Alexander/Dooin one. An early image of Alexander as well and a very recognizable image of Dooin.

Joshua

Posted By: martindl

Joshua,
You said "I have seen only one other "Crack Batteries" cover (Bender and Thomas)and have heard of a Matty cover but have never seen it."

I have seen the Matty Cracked Batteries cover, probably three years ago now. I was the underbidder on Ebay. If memory serves it was Mathewson paired with Benny Kauff, which would date it to 1916 at the earliest.

Posted By: Ben
Some great notebooks here! I am actually looking to sell the same notebook Leon posted. It is the Christy Mathewson notebook with yellow cover. This exact notebook sold in the March 2007 Huggins and Scott auction for $517.50 (with buyer's premium). I am looking to get $275.00 for it. Please see the memorabilia for sale section. THANKS!

Posted By: J Levine
I can certainly say that my notebook dates from no later than Sept./Oct. of 1914 as the student who wrote in it took notes for those dates. I cannot imagine a 4th grade student dating the book every day for a few months incorrectly by two years. Ira Thomas ended his career in 1913 (except for a 3 games total the following two years). Dooin's last year with the Phillies was 1914. If I recall, and this is my bad memory, but the Matty cover was Matty and Meyers and Meyers was done with the Giants in 1915. And just to be clear...Kauff was not a catcher, he played CF. I am fairly certain that these covers were between 1913 and 1914.

Joshua

Posted By: martindl
Joshua,
I was not suggesting that your note book is not from 1914. Apologies if it sounded that way. I thought the Matty was with Kauff, which would have dated it to 1916, though I might have been wrong about Kauff obviously.
