Posted By: Brock G.
Finally got my hands on this tie rack after searching for some time. I love functional things like this. Hard enough to find at all let alone with all the tie holders. I saw this in two past Hunt Auctions but both auctions were from a few years ago and one had no hangers and one was missing a few. Anybody seen one of these sell more recently?

Posted By: Mark Steinberg
Brock... That is indeed a beauty! This is a rare one for sure. They must not have produced many of these back in the day. I do remember the Hunt example, and yours looks 100% nicer. I would stay away from any that were missing a hanger.. but yours looks pristine.

May I ask where you found it? Always curious as to where/how these old things turn up. Congrats on a rare find!

Posted By: Dan Bretta
I wouldn't stay away from one just because of missing hangers...I have a tie rack that is similar to this, but not baseball related and the hangers are easily removable...and in fact the hangers on this one look exactly like the ones on my tie rack so replacing them would be fairly easy. Is that rack made out of chalkware?

edited to add: here's an ebay auction with the same type of hangers...if you pinch them they come right out - so if you ever find one of those Jackie Robinson racks missing the hangers they are cheaply replaceable.

http://tinyurl.com/262tbr

Posted By: Mark Steinberg
Dan... If there is anyone more on top of these things than you, I would like to know who it is! That's a great suggesion... I bet the clips are totally interchangeable. Makes me wish I went for the one in Hunt's a while back!

Posted By: Brock G.
Those type of tie hangers are very commonly found on tie racks from that period. I have another baseball tie rack made in the 50's that have very similiar hangers (with some missing actually). They are a little larger though and I dont think they would fit the J.R. rack. You could probably definetely find replacement hangers but it might take some trial and error to find the right size. For all I know the ones on there may be relacements.
It is not made of chalkware but actually a hard fiberboard material. Seems to be a very durable material.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
I would bet that you could buy one of those tie racks with all the hangers and just replace all the hangers so they all look the same. Doubtful it would ever affect value in a negative way as there probably is no way to tell like you said that it even has the original hangers. As for them not fitting I think they could be bent one way or the other easily for a snug fit.

What is the value of the Jackie tie rack? I was told that they are extremely scarce.
