Posted By: Mike H
Is there any one collector who has what is considered the finest baseball pennant collection in the hobby? They don't get much press, but there must be an exceptional collection out there.

Posted By: jims
Hi Mike, I love large pennants and have about a dozen fairly old ones. But pennants are made to display and the wall space required to do that is their disadvantage. I do have probably one of the largest collections around of the small 1936-37 BF3 pennants, currently about 425 different ones. These I display in glass enclosed cases. I will try to post some pictures during the coming week.

Posted By: Mark Steinberg
Mike: I just joined tonight, and this is my first post.

I think I might have the best vintage baseball pennant collection in the world... top 3 anyway. The collection spans from turn of the century to the late '60s. It stops at the point manufacturers felt the need to cheapen / mass-produce the artwork, make them stiff instead of soft, and include the MLB Logo. Until I can figure out how to display them on the floors or ceiling however, I have had to slow it down a bit. I had hoped to create some type of memorabilia museum someday, but am doubtful that enough people would actually appreciate.

Posted By: Mark Steinberg
No White Sox prior to 1920, but I do have an amazing 1919 Reds Champions Pennant (kind of White Sox-Related, if you know what I mean!) I do have a very unusual White Sox Pennant from the late 20s or early 30s, and think I have most Chisox variations from the 1940s - on...

Just need to learn how to post pics here (and find a way to carve out more free-time for this great site!)

Different than all of those pictured in the previous thread, too.

If someone can tell me how to get pictures on this #### thing, I would be happy to post a few. Thanks again!

Posted By: Mar Steinberg
Many thanks again to Greg and Keith for helping me figure out the picture posting procedure!

Here is a really fun Red Sox Pennant from the early '50s. For some reason, you NEVER see this variation. I have another that is similar... maybe better, but it is buried for now. They must have really under-produced this one at the time. I just don't understand why these never turn up. I would think that Sox fans would have loved this "Batting Sock" logo...

Posted By: Mar Steinberg
My best recent pick-up... a 1913 World Series Pennant. The artwork on this one is almost hypnotizing, with Ben Franklin and the Giant in a friendly confrontation. Probably made for Giants fans, as their mascot seems to be the primary focus. Too bad that Philly got the better of them in this one!

Posted By: Mark Steinberg
Dan: I was just a kid in the late '60s when the pennant bug bit me. My Dad would typically buy me a Pennant for $1.00 each time we went to a Reds game at Crosley Field.

Then, in 1969, something terrible happened. The artistry disappeared, the pennants became stiff instead of soft, and the "powers that be" had to include the mass-produced MLB Logo on everything. It made me realize that pride of workmanship was something to be appreciated, and I have been building the vintage collection ever since.

Safe to say, it has become an obsession over the years. I would love to do a Coffee-table Book some day, and really feel (like many others) that memorabilia is way undervalued, compared to the more common cards.

I am so glad that many people on this site seem to love and appreciate the same things as me. Hope more people can continue to share their great pennants as well... thanks!!

Posted By: Greg Theberge
Mark, I thought that Boston pennant of yours looked familiar. It's actually pictured in a small BoSox memorabilia book Called Boston Red Sox Memories and Memorabilia of New England's Team by Chadwick and Spindel. It's a cute little book, but not one that goes into a lot of depth. In fact, they incorrectly label that pennant of yours from the 40s which it is obviously wrong. They also show the common red WS Champions pennant and the white 1915 Red Sox pennant as well as another 1912 "Red Sox American League Champions" pennant similar to mine, but with a batter, not a pitcher.

Keep those pennants coming. Great stuff

Posted By: Rob Dewolf
Hi Andy,

Just wanted to add my two cents about your comment regarding the missing tassels: It's been my experience that on vintage pennants, missing tassels aren't that big of a deal as far as negatively impacting the value. I've bought and sold quite a few pennants and have never had anyone ask me (nor have I asked) for a price adjustment because all of some of the tassels were missing. Sure, it's always nice when all four are present, but other than for simple aesthetics and personal preference, I wouldn't worry too much.

Again, just my opinion. I'd be curious to know what others think.

Good luck with the pennants,

Rob

Posted By: Mark Steinberg
Agree.... the Kelloggs 3-D Cards were magical as a kid. I'll never forget pulling the Tony Perez Card in my first attempt.

Andy... just shoot me your want-list when you have a chance. I think the color shading is indeed original to your NYG Pennant. Not a very precise printing job, as it does bleed into the felt quite a bit. I still think its acceptable for this pennant, and am confident we can work a trade to your liking... Thanks! Mark imstroft@yahoo.com

Posted By: Mike H
Thanks Andy. I've been after that pin a while and placed a pretty hefty bid. I was very surprised (pleased) that it didn't go much higher. Yes, let me know about the pennant please. I'm conflicted because I'm more Cubs than Tiger's fan, but collect them both.

Posted By: Mark Steinberg
Dennis:

That's a tough one.... In many many years of collecting pennants, I don't ever recall seeing a pennant specifically commemorating the 1939 HOF Ceremonies.

The "oldest looking" ones I have seen are 3/4 sized pennants with very detailed and beautiful graphics portraying the HOF Museum. My guess is that these are from the early to mid '40s.

Then they did all of those oversized versions with the numerous Players' head shots. I suppose these ones could be easily dated, based on who was represented (and the induction year of the most recent inductee portrayed).

Sorry for giving you such a non-specific answer. If you have any dated ones, or what you think to be a very early variation, please post it!

Posted By: Mark Steinberg
Dennis:

I was finally able to locate a pennant that commemorates the Baseball Centennial in 1939. Attached below is a picture. Please let me know if you are interested... due to scarcity, the price is $5,000.

ps. Not very convincing, I know. This is the "pennant" equivalent to what a few Ebay scammers are doing with vintage Ad Pieces, Broadsides, Fan for a Fan items, etc. One guy in particular is especially guilty of this.

A couple of those "repro" pennants have even made it into some of the major Catalog Auctions recently!

Posted By: Max Weder
Ok, this pennant thread has put $15 at risk for me, by inspiring me to bid on pennants of which I have no knowledge.

This was auctioned as a first Expos pennant, pre-bleu, blanc, rouge and the stylized lettering. Is this right?

Yours from back in the summer of 1968....

Posted By: Mark Steinberg
Max:

That may the first Expos Pennant I have ever seen that is worthy of owning. Honestly, I've never seen that variation, or for that matter, ANY Expos Pennant besides that goofy tri-colored puffy "M" thing.

What size is that one? It looks like it may be 3/4 size or even a mini pennant??? Thanks for posting that one!
