Posted By: Joe K.
I know there are some folks out there on the forum that collect vintage leather football helmets. Did any of you catch this one?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=009&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=190115220863&rd=1&rd=1

What happended here?? This a common helmet, while it is nice and there is a lot of demand for leather helmets, it goes for $400 tops. I guess that's what happens when two people really want something and don't know the market for the item. The good news for the under bidder is that another similar helmet will pop up on ebay every week.

Posted By: Joe K.
Bushing is currently selling the exact same helmet for $500 on MEARS. Same Make, Model, Size and Condition. So if Bushing is asking $500, you know it should go cheaper on eBay. Condition isn't the factor, helmets like that in similar condition are common. Here two bidders just really wanted it for whatever reason.

https://www.mearsonline.com/forsale/item/?id=2269

Posted By: Jimmy
I agree with Dan condition is a big factor, even though this is a common style helmet of the 30s and 40s, yes ended high, but brand name, model number and condition all factor in. Vintage football helmets are popular, sometimes it just takes the right buyer. I still would only estimate the helmet at 800.00-900.00 and a good price to buy would be 400.00-500.00.

Take Care Jimmy

Posted By: Joe K.
Hi Jimmy- I respectfully disagree. I am not sure if you collect helmets and follow it closely, but I do. I would definetly not estimate it at $800-900, and even $500 is on the high end. Certainly condition is a factor, but that is why it is worth $400-500 and not $200. As I said before Bushing is selling the samd helmet, same band name, model number and condition, currently for $500. I am not sure if you know Bushing, but trust me if he is selling it for $500 it is not worth any more than that.

Thanks-
Joe

Posted By: Jimmy
I agree with you that 500.00 would be fine on the internet, and you may find it at a lower price. There are many collectors and dealers out there that are not on the internet and I see many deals outside the internet with private collectors, vintage sporting items have increased over the last few years. I buy and sell a lot of items that are similar and most of the time the deals are outside the internet, but if you are at the right place at the right time anything is possible.

Jimmy
Posted By: Joseph
Well this helmet DOES have a chin strap, but I doubt that adds 200% to the selling price. No folks, take a look at the bidding history: generally serious snipers do not begin a bidding war 5 minutes before an auction ends--they bid at the end. Period. Someone knew they had someone on the hook here and someone took the bait.
