Posted By: Aspectwolf
Could anyone help me out with a card my Grandfather gave me to see if it was real and worth anything.
It's the Honus Wagner card that everyone knows about.
Only problem is that it was in a house fire and the edge of the card has fire damage.
There's also a bad crease across the front.
Either way, I'll put the link to the scans of the card's front and back on here, so you can view it for yourself.
What I'd really like to know is if it an authentic card and if it might be worth anything in it's condition.
Thanks in advance, here are the links to the pics.
Aspectwolf

It's interesting that t206 Wagner cards have withstood fires, floods, earthquakes, volcanos, and one was eaten by a dog and survived intact - amazing but true. There has been much discussion about this in the baseball card collecting community that possibly the t206 Wagners were treated by the printer with a special laquer or fluid of some sort to make them almost impervious to nature. Sort of the same type of fluids that the Egyptians used to preserve mummies. In any event, check out this website at http://www.brucemo.com/cards/articles/pro_grading.htm
where you can send the card to one of these grading companies that can authenticate the card for you. The card does look real to me. The burn marks appear to be consistent with that of a genuine burned t206 Wagner. Good luck!

If it came from a house a fire, it should have much more discoloration due to smoke. This looks more like the edges were set on fire, then blown out. The Piedmont back doesn't help either since there are only 2 know legit examples. The rest all having Sweet Caporal backs. Best thing to do if you want an opinion is to submit it to SGC, GAI or PSA.

Jay

I saw weird stuff in that place last night. Weird, strange, sick, twisted, eerie, godless, evil stuff. And I want in.
