Posted By: Scott M
Why stop at stealing scans when you can just completely rip someones recently completed auction instead.

Funny that the scammer even bothered to change the year to 1906 but left American League in the description.

Original auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31718&item=5915561516&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

"Tribute" auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=30&item=5121114202&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Posted By: AdamBaxter
The new seller claims that he's selling a different game and that he has the Original sellers permission to use his images and description. Here's his e-mail:

Subject: Re: Question for item #5121114202 - Fan Craze Baseball Game , from 1906
Date: 9/4/2004 12:17:46 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From: larrywebmail@yahoo.co.uk
Reply To:
To: ajohnbaxter@aol.com
CC:
BCC:
Sent on:

I think you are very wrong.

First of all I have a 1906 game not the 1904 that was for sale a week ago. I used the pics because I have the permision of the user who had them.
My game looks exactly the same.

I talked to ebay aslo and they told me that if I have the permision of the original owner of the pics it's not a problem.
So mind your own business.

have a nice day

I filed a report with Safeharbor anyway. To be fair, he may be telling the truth, but it seems very suspect in my opinion. Ebay will have the final say.
Posted By: Scott M
Hey Adam,

Thanks for sharing the response that you were sent even though it was pretty weak.

If I was truely selling a similar item and going to borrow someone elses scans and descriptions, I'd at least make sure to clean up the parts of the description that don't pertain to my item.

The scammer didn't even bother to remove the following line:

"This appears to be an earlier version of the same game name we have offered before. RARE. Shows little storage wear. Never used, been in storage. From 112 year old store in Newton, KS."

Let us know if you hear any more regarding this one...

Scott

Posted By: AdamBaxter
Just heard from the the original seller of the Fan Craze game and surprise, surprise: The legit seller had no idea what the "tribute" scammer was doing. So the scammer lied about getting permission to use the legit sellers images and description and Ebay shut his ass down!

Posted By: Aaron M.
Great job, Adam. Although the number of scammers on E-Bay sometimes appear overwhelming, it's nice to know we can strike back every so often.

Posted By: AdamBaxter
But, all the credit for this one really goes to Scott M. (phlflyer1) for finding these auctions. If he hadn't posted, that "Tribute" seller would've ripped someone off for sure.

Posted By: AdamBaxter
The "Tribute" seller's Ebay ID is JohnGeoman. In his e-mails to me he said his name was Larry and his e-mail had a UK address. Ebay apparently thought the situation was worth looking into because they shut his auction down AND suspended his account.

Posted By: Scott M
Adam, you (and others) are more than deserving of the majority of the credit for taking the actions that you did.

I'm glad to see that the auction (and auctioneer) were shut down.

Thanks for sharing the outcome with us!
