Posted By: Gary B.
This article has nothing to do with vintage baseball cards per se, it's about people auctioning off Britney Spears' (allegedly) used gum on ebay, but the principle is the same:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/09/03/britney.trash.ap/index.html

This to me is the crucial statement in the article:

Chris Donlay, a publicist for eBay, says the veracity of the gum claims isn't the business of the Web site. "As long as it doesn't violate our policies, then it's really between the buyer and the seller."

Obviously eBay cares about making money, not making sure people aren't getting ripped off and that there website is being used by criminals stealing from people in plain view all the time. No wonder vintage card collecting has become such a tenuous activity on ebay, and here's proof that it ain't stopping anytime soon...

Posted By: tbob
You can buy the gum on ebay and use her DNA to create a whole harem of insipid, vapid, vain, 20 something women who have the IQ of a canatalope and the personality of the wad of gum from which they are derived. Unfrigging believable...

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Isn't the proof in the actual eBay policies and not in this article which is slanted to lead the reader into believing that their policies are inadequate?

Of course, the adequacy of their policies are open to debate. But the proof is also in the fact that if a buyer exercises reasonable caution in the purchase of baseball cards, 99% of the time he will not get a fake card.

And fake is the subject of this post, not grade. Now PSA/DNA could bring a new dimension to gum grading.

Posted By: petecld
tbob,

I'm no mind reader but I get the feeling you're not a Britney Spears fan. I thought eBay had a rule about selling any tpe of item that had anything to do with bodily fluids???

You guys can have Britney's gum but if Salma Hayek's gum gets auctioned, let me win it. . . and then refer me to a good cloning lab.

Posted By: Darren J Duet
I've got a wad of gum from a pack of 1952 Topps. It was adhered to the reverse of #311. Maybe I can get Halie Berry to chew it and then clone both she and the Mick at once????
