Posted By: david
i have a question for those out there that own or have seen many g & b's. just about every card that i have seen has had wavy borders left to right, suggesting that they were probably hand cut in this direction. has anyone else noticed this or have any comments

Here's the six from Mastro:
http://www.mastronet.com/index.cfm?Action=DisplayContent&ContentName=Lot%20Search%20List
SGC graded one a 5.0, so it doesn't look like they are too concerned about the cut.

Posted By: leon
Most I have seen are wavy....one way or the other...and SGC takes this into consideration, imo.....regards...ps if anyone can "shrink" this pic it would be great...otherwise sorry for the largeness

Posted By: The Other One
(was that on topic?)

Everyone agrees they are some of the most desirable and beautiful of 19th century cards. But--could the have veeb been cut by hand?

Posted By: Paul
I've never even held one of these in my hand, so what I have to say is pure speculation. But it seems to me pretty likely that these cards were actually inserted into packs of gum. They're very rare, but not so rare that they could have come from 2 or 3 proof sheets that were cut up years ago by the Woody Gelman of his time.

If they really do all have wavy borders, maybe they were handcut by G&B itself, trying to save a little money on one of those costly paper cutting machines.

Posted By: leon
Not sure about how they were distributed but I would speculate, from all I have seen, that they were indeed hand cut. As far as being proofs.....don't think so.....both the portrait and fielding/batting poses are too "finished" looking, albeit a little crude....imo....take care
